2008 or newer H/U in a 330i
I called the dealer about installing the iPod interface into my 330i and he recommended against it because the functionality of it for the 330 was limited to playlists.
![]() My friend has a 2008 328i and the interface works very well and permits searching by artist/album/song etc. That is the functionality that I am seeking. I have bluetooth and Sirius in my 330i. Would it be possible to purchase the headunit out of a 328 or 335 and install it into my car and then install the bmw ipod interface? I'm wondering if its cheaper to replace the HU
It seems you might be able to get an whole aftermarket head unit that has all these functions plus more for less than you could dealing with BMW. The low price on a factory Ipod install was about 500 bucks last time I checked. Problems with the Most Bus remain and issue in installing aftermarket units. If you search through the adds on audio options in this board there are many, you will get some idea of the problems with adding things . The big problem with these mods is that every time you change something hanging off the most bus like adding and ipod interface is the car needs to be programmed to recognize the change which means the bmw or some shop that has an auto logic programmer has to be involved with it , to my understanding.

Replacing the HU in a factory L7 system is a HUGE ordeal in that you have to do what ctuna said. I've recently been contemplating this in my 06 330i and finally decided to do a line out converter and just add a sub. If your goal is using your iPod/iPhone with your car then there some options for you, but as far as integrating it into your steering wheels/factory controls you may be out of luck.

Add an OEM iPod adapter. Do not replace the headunit especially if you have Logic 7. It is not worth the trouble.
