mP3 player for 2007 335i Sedan

Hi ,

I just picked up an e90 2007 335i. Unreal car....!

The car has an aux jack for an mp3 player.

I want to buy an mp3 player but was wondering what people recommend? Also, will the steering wheel controls control the song selection?

How about sound quality? I have the Harman Kardon.

thanks...

I'd recommend getting an ipod in the event you want to get the ipod integration kit. Plugging in an mp3 player to the Aux port does not allow you to control the mp3 player via your stereo system controls. The only way to gain control over your player is via the integration kit, and that is only for the ipod.

And I don't believe there is a Harmon Kardon system. There's only the standard and the Logic 7 system.

Thank you for the reply...

I thought the stereo was a HK but either way I am impressed with it.

My car is non i-drive. This ipod integration kit is sold by bmw i assume? Does the dealer sell it? Price?

I guess it integrates with the ipod and allows me to use the steering wheel controls to change songs etc....

yes, to all your questions. not sure how much it'd be in canada but in the states, i think the adapter runs for about $500 with installation (may be a little more). and it will enable you to control the player with the buttons on your steering wheel. the iDrive is not a requirement, i don't think. you can still see the names of the songs on your info display, it just won't be as nice as it'd be on the iDrive screen.

also, i'm a huge Apple fan, but have no intentions of buying an iPod. i had Rio Karma for the longest time (exceptional sound quality) but it died on me recently and right now, i'm demoing a Creative Zen Vision:M. so far so good, but nowhere near the audio quality i got with my Rio.

since E90s have the AUX jack, i'd recommend not spending money on the iPod connector + iPod but rather get yourself a decent MP3 player that will do custom EQ, sound good and have a rich set of features in it.

HK makes many of the components for the L7. When I spoke with BMWUSA, I asked them for the manufacturer of the L7 and they told me that it was HK.

I'm a huge IPOD fan. Have tried some others and did not like.

Ah cool, something I did not know.

For more information on L7, http://www.lexicon.com/logic7/index.asp

I think I finally need to jump on the Ipod bandwagon. I've been putting it off and my GF got a shuffle and it's pretty cool. I currently have a Creative Zen Touch and while being sufficient in playing music and costing less than an IPOD, I can't seem to fight the urge to get an IPOD.

BTW Italia, that BMW jacket from Passport should have been mine!!!!

congrats! haha

Go iPod!

There are two reasons that iPod leads the market by a significant margin, despite better featured players being available at lower cost.

1) iTunes. The biggest reason for iPod's success is, in my mind, the seamless integration with iTunes. Right now, there is no better way to manage your music in software than through iTunes. I have tried. Podcast management, audiobooks, TV shows and the music store are icing on the cake.

2) The interface. When managing several thousand songs on a handheld device without keyboard input, interface is everything. iPod's interface is the best without question.

The only other player of interest right now is the Zune. I haven't played with one yet, but they look very good and are priced competitively against iPod. My only concern is that there is no discernable way to played DRM'ed music. While DRM sucks (in fact, I hate it) being able to buy the occassional song on iTunes instead of buying a whole CD is great. I have too many CDs I bought for 1-2 tracks and then ignored the rest.

I was quoted C$380 for the part and 1.5 hours labour to install by my dealer a while back.

Sorry for the hi-jack ... I'm actually thinking about a Zen M as well for when my car arrives. How is the quality of the sound through the headphone jack output into lineout? I'm still researching but I haven't seen a way yet to get a lineout on the Zen.

Can't you just output the sound through the headphone jack on the Zen and into the Aux-In? That's what I do with my ipod.
