nvm, google is my friend:

"modifications that bypass the catalytic converters and/or mufflers, such as electric or cable activated exhaust cutouts—which open and reroute the exhaust flow to bypass restrictions in the system—can similarly increase performance, though would likely be illegal in areas where tampering with emissions devices is prohibited, particularly when placed in front of the catalytic converters."

So these go in before the 2nd set of cats?

Has anyone used them on a BMW and if so, lots of drone, issues, problems, or loud when you don't want? HP and torque gains, has anyone dyno'd with these open and then closed, comapring them against a cat-less exhaust?

They seem really cool, but it seems there would be some long term issues as far as sound, drone, etc. that would make the car very loud and not really BMW-essque or appropriate for a daily driver?

check out exhaust cutouts at Summit Racing website, and best place to install is forward the midpipes.. it will sound incredible and you can use toggle switch to close and run quiet.. I'm planning to get this soon

I recommend the QuickTime Performance ones. I had one on my Grand National. They are slick, and a lot of fun! Makes for some deafening blasts through tunnels and underpasses.

I would only see a benefit of an E-cutout (exhaust cut out) if you had aftermarket downpipes, into a cut out.

Otherwise you only by pass the secondary cats which dont do much anyway.

Just some food for thought.

I thought about E Cut out myself but anyway its a universal install so you would need to find someone that can weld them in.

There are no kits available last I checked.

If you buy quicktime... make sure to buy the controller.

Using the switch alone will over torque the electric motors and burn them out very quickly.
