Bird Poo + Sun + Long Wait = Bad! Help?
So, a while back a seagull left me a nice little present on the hood of my 330i. I was at work, and chances are, it was left to bake in the glorious hot southern California heat. I really didn't notice the poo stain when I got off of work in the evening... so it probably baked for a couple of hours (days??). Bad bad bad. As soon as I did notice it, I wiped it off. However, some of it stayed and appeared to be "baked" into the paint.
![]() I just got around to fixing the bird poo stain. I used 3M's rubbing compound because a normal wash did not do anything. It got most of the sun baked poo off, but much to my dismay, it appeared as if the poo "ate" through the clearcoat and into the basecoat, leaving a couple nasty valleys and canyons right on the hood of the car. It's about 1" x 1" and it looks awful. The remaining rubbing compound that's stuck in the divot and didn't get picked up by wiping makes it look even worse--but it makes it easier to see the damage. Any ideas of how I can fix this myself? Ick! ![]() Oh no! ![]() WHY????? ![]() Last edited by Schmoman; 03-07-2010 at 10:05 PM.. |

OR "BIRD BOMBS Without a doubt, one of the most dreaded car care problems we face is the bird. Birds in the air are beautiful to watch fly, but vile to our car's finish. A bird's droppings can quickly cause damage to your paint. Bird droppings are very acidic (pH 3.5 to 4.5). When bird droppings fall on your paint, the acid begins to burn and etch the paint's surface. The longer the bird droppings remain, the greater the damage. I've had bird bomb incidents with my Speed Yellow Porsche 996 (the seagulls seem to think it's just a target) that have created damage as deep as 1 to 2 mils. To give you an idea of what that means, notebook paper is approximately 2 mils of thickness. Your car's paint is only 4 to 6 mils thick. The result of bird dropping damage is a dimple in the paint's surface, often as large as an inch or more in diameter. This damage is permanent, but can easily be repaired." http://www.autopia-carcare.com/inf-p...sh-clinic.html |

That is some bad etching, you are going to have to polish that out with a machine. If you have a PC or rotary, you can use M105 folowed up with a medium polish, and then final polish.

Use the least abrasive product first-
1. Use a paint surface cleaner (Z-PC Fusion Dual Action Paint Cleaner) 2. Try to dissolve the surface/etched deposits trying one or more of the following; a) Use a 2:1 or stronger solution of distilled water/distilled white vinegar (Acetic acid) b) Try a 2:1 solution of distilled water/Isopropyl Alcohol (adjust ratio as required) c) Or equal parts distilled water/distilled white vinegar/Isopropyl alcohol. 3. Clean the effected surface with Klasse All-In-One or Zaino Z-PC Fusion Dual Action Paint Cleaner 4. Use detailing clay to remove any `hard' surface granules 5. Use a machine polish (Optimum Polish, Optimum Compound) and a cutting (LC White, Orange or Yellow) foam pad (speed # 4- 5.0) to level the surface 6. For Ceramiclear or other hard clear coats substitute Menzerna for machine polish; PO 203 S - Power Finish 7. Use the least aggressive polish/foam pad first, if this doesn’t remove the problem step-up to a more aggressive polish / foam pad set-up 8. Wet-sand with 2000, 2500 or 3000 grit finishing paper |
