steptronic reactions to more power discussion
I am thinking about starting to up the power using the likes of a jb3 or equivilent and have worries about the auto tranny adapting to the new power.
Have searched and searched and found very limited info on how the increase in power effects the gearbox in terms of shift times, gear selection etc. Does the auto tranny adapt to the new power and adjust itself to compensate for the extra torque, ie does it make use of it in higher gears rather than shifting down or are we still left with the same "map" for the tranny? Sorry if that makes no sense but im sure others must of had the same worries before tuning their auto tranny 335i's. Any feedback or experiences would help me greatly in my decision Thanks for reading |

My 6AT handles it just fine
then again, I'm in M mode 100% of the time (learned and lived with manuals...just lazy with all my driving and traffic.. but I still have to know what gear I'm in) The car has a smart ECU It will adapt to your driving style and throttle You shouldn't need to worry

yes its adapts a lot. Once i did not drive the car for about 3 weeks but my GF did.
i can tell you that when i drove the car the first time i was like WTF! The car was shifting very early in D and response was slow. Took only 30 minutes to fix that :-)

When using a piggy back system the gearbox will take whatever you can throw at it. There are safety features that are calculated using complex algorithms but since the ECU is being fooled these calculations are incorrect. We found when tuning in extremes with flash tune gearbox faults are thrown. We have since changed certain software on the gearbox.

thanks for the replies, its put my mind a bit at ease now, have also seen hotrods vids, amazing power!
If you do read this Hotrod I assume it still runs flawlessly? I suppose if something does go wrong with the tranny my car is still in warranty, its just a case of remove jb3, scan and erase all codes and dealer has to repair it! I hope so anyway! |
