3D HD TV

I guess it's time to upgrade my TV again. I bet this will be the new wave of interactive entertainment. $3,300 for 55''/1080P/240Hz LED-LCD seems reasonable.

I really don't understand how a movie theater screen can show 3D but a TV can not do so without being 3D ready. Doesn't make sense since the image is still being projected from a single flat surface. I also checked out the Sony 3D TV at the Sony store and I guess it was cool but I'll wait a few years to make sure this isn't a short-lived gimmick. I saw Alice in Wonderland last night and while it was pretty neat to see 3D, the image is also much darker than normal and I find the picture to be much less crisp and clear.

With the 3D ready TV you will not need the glasses. Hence the 3D ready part.

Why do I feel like the only people that will buy this technology (and eat it up), are ones that meet at least two of these requirements:

a) frequent Wal-Mart and have likely been seen on www.peopleofwalmart.com

b) bought the Shake-Weight the night they saw it while watching Nick At Night re-runs

c) have more than five kids

d) owns and often wears a T-shirt that states "All your base are belong to us."

e) buy their weight in popcorn, extra large sodas, and sno-caps each time they go to the movies

Affordable 3D television is still in the distant future and you WILL have to wear glasses - you have to show each eye a different image and to do so, you need to either polarise the light (as in the movies) or 'shutter' alternate eye images with smart glasses.

And if any of these use DLP technology (which is dead) then what's the point?

I am a TV fanatic and usually buy a new model every year and IMO, 3D is overhyped similar to 'LED' TVs which are not LED televisions at all. In fact it is so misleading that in the UK, Samsung was banned from advertising them as LED televisions because well...they're not are they.

Hmm, yeah that kind of kills it for me then. I had read something like this a while ago and thought it had progressed to that point. Didn't think they would make the users don glasses to view the 3D. Lamesauce.

for now you still have to wear glasses, with the progress of OLED tv's, the 3D effect without glasses could be possibly. OLED tv's can be as thin as a sheet of paper. And it is thought that many of these layered, it could produce a 3D effect.

However, they are having a lot of trouble making larger OLED sets. And they are very expensive. It could be quite awhile till they are affordable. And 3D is very far from being affordable.

The 3D that these new TV's will be showing is not the old anaglyph 3D with the 2 colored glasses. Its stereoscopic 3D that will be in full 1080p and use active shutter glasses. From the people who have seen Demo's it is supposed to stunning. Vastly better than Avatar ever hoped to look

I personally though would wait a couple of years for all of the bugs to get ironed out. Buying early tech is always a problem

I was gonna jump on the 3D bandwagon, but there aren't enough movies out to justify it.

No, I've never made a purchase that large anywhere!

But, NewEgg has excellent customer service and you don't pay tax with them. Amazon is good too, but obviously NewEgg's specialty is electronics.

NewEgg is a customer of mine. They take pretty good care of their customers. ESPN and Discovery are both launching 3D channels later this year. This is the next wave for home electronics unfortunately. I don't think that $3K is that bad for the set, but I am not really interested in the technology.
