Fellow Canucks do not use Fedex
Last April I ordered rims/tires for my S2000 from Tire Rack and had them shipped via Fedex. Everything arrived as it should and I paid a $40 in brokerage fees.
Last week I ordered winter tires for the BMW from TR and had them shipped via Fedex expecting them to arrive this week. I get a call from Fedex today telling me that they have some documents to sign so my shipment can clear customs. I have never had to sign anything with any shipper to clear customs beforre, but had them fax it to my office. The document that needs to be signed gives Fedex "one time power of attorney" and on that document you must provide a GST number, whether you are a business or an individual. WTF???. I called Fedex and explained that I was purchasing this as an individual. The Fedex rep explained that this information must be colllected and if I didn't have a GST number that I could provide my SIN to Fedex and on my behalf they would get a GST number for me. . There is no fcuking way that I am giving my SIN to some Fedex operator. I managed to remain calm, hung up the phone and called CBS (Canadian Border Service). I spoke to a customs agent who put me on hold and called Fedex to tell them that there was no need to collect this information. After being on hold for 10 min, the helpful (and I'm actually serious) customs agent told me that he talked to the Fedex rep that I had spoken to, and her supervisor. He told them that there was no need to collect this information, and their response was that it is Fedex policy. My choices are: 1) Get a GST number. Which is very interesting in that the CCRA website clearly states that GST numbers are only for businesses. To apply on-line for a GST number, you must agree to the terms and conditions listed and one of those conditions is that the GST number my be used for business purposes. 2) Tell Fedex that they better send me my tires and that I am not providing them with a number and they can go fcuk themselves. 3) Tell Fedex to send the tires back to TR. They were sent prepaid, so the contract is between Fedex and TR. This whole issue is really pissing me off. I also believe that Fedex is probably in violation of the new privacy laws by asking for information which is not required, especially with regards to asking for my SIN. End of rant.

Send them back to TR and buy some well made Canadian tires. Although I think they only make snow tires in Canada.

Edit: It would probably be advisable though to inform TR that their merchandise may be coming back to them, as FedEx is requiring that you do something not legal in this country before being allowed to take delivery.

So much for Fedex's sterling reputation - I'd be pissed also with them asking for a SIN number or GST number for an individual.
Given the same choices I would opt to send them back, and then either re-order from Tire Rack with shipping by UPS, or try Tire Trends or 1010 Tires in B.C. Hope it works out for you. |
