keyless E92 driver door handle mod

Here is my driver's door handle with the door lock removed and a blank cap put on that came from a right hand drive E92. I also had a clear security film put on all the side windows but you can't tell...

Cool. But what happens if your keys battery goes dead? How will you open the doors?

Have your dealer parts person pull up the UK parts book and then look for the left door cover. I don't have a number for you. I gave it to a body shop that painted it with my car colour, installed it, and handed me my new lock cylinder. I'm told a lot of M3 owners do this as well to prevent a person from using a screw driver to open the door and deactivate the alarm via the lock, which happened to my car .

Vancouver, i believe, has the highest petty crime rate and car theft per capita in North America so my dealer has to replace lots of locks every week. VW's are equally targeted. I was told by ICBC (the insurance corporation of B.C.) that BMW corporate was told by them about the issue of the locks.

The security film i got from my tint place is clear (with zero tint) and blocks UV rays. Quite a few manufactures make it including 3M. It's mostly used for residential and business building glass but they promote it for autos too. I got the 4mil thickness, which is the thinnest - any thicker and you will have issues with the door seals in the door.
See example sizes and standards: http://www.securityprousa.com/seprfiforca.html

I had it installed on the side front and back windows only.

The windows on the E92 are different than E90 windows i'm told (and found out ). The glass shatters into much smaller fragments when struck or leaned on when the door is open (someone leaned on my window when the door was open!).

4 questions....

1. so they have to take out the lock cylinder? Not just put on a new cap?

2. Can a US Dealership order from UK Parts?

3. Isn't it a good thing the glass shatters into smaler parts?

4. Total Cost?

Sorry for the late reply. I need to learn how to subscribe to threads i create

1. yes, they have to take the lock cylinder out, i was told, since the cap won't fit over it. But it's is a good thing to remove the lock. If you have the lock in the door then they can use a screw driver to unlock all the doors, open the windows and turn off the alarm. I don't know enough about the alarm but my guess is it plugs into the lock cylinder. If you didn't plug it in and left it unplugged then if someone were to try the screwdriver thing they would at least set off the alarm (assuming you have an alarm).

2. i can't answer that but canadian dealers can order it.

3. yes, that is a good thing about the glass on the E92's.

4. it cost me about $26 canadian for the part.

The battery wont die so easily, because it recharges every time you plug it into the car. You would have sold the car even before the battery dies, i reckon. hehe
