I have bought my 328i picked it up and supposed to trade in my toyota avalon, they gave me way less than i was supposed to but we decided to go for it and get the money off, we didnt complete the transaction bc i didnt have the title and i lost it on the car so before we finish things they need me to get the title or else they cant take the trade in they said and i am having trouble finding it, would it be ok just to pay them the cash value than for the rest of the deal? ive given payments for the rest of the car just the trade in left

I would just go to DMV and get a new title slip. It's like $7 isn't it?
I believe they can also have you sign over bill of sale

Obvious answer... if you can afford it, pay the amount of the trade in value and sell the Avalon privately and make money. Example, say they were giving you 23k for the Avalon, you pay them 23k, find your title, and sell the Avalon provately for 28k and pocket the 5k. There's a convenience factor of trading that sometimes makes it worth it to just accept the low trade in value. If you're a busy guy, or you just don't feel like dealing with the tire kickers and phone calls from private buyers, then just trade it.

My first sports car was a 93 Miata (blank and tan, very nice car). I had it for about 6 years and barely drove it. Eventually, I lost my parking spot for it and decided it was time to sell. I was dreading it, not because I was attached to the car, but because I just didn't want the hassle. I parked it on a well traveled road, and literally, as I was parking it and putting a for sale sign on it, someone pulled up and bought it on the spot. Painless, quick and effortless.

In your case, not knowing the year of the Avalon so I can't tell how much you would make, but you can probably expect to get atleast 15% more from a private sale than the dealer offers in trade.

Yeah I would not trade-in the car and try to sell it privately. If there is a Carmax go see what they will give you. I have had great success with them on trade-ins. Get them to lower or give you some goodies since the transaction is not complete. Oh if you can use a reward credit card and rack up some miles if you can!

I agree that you'll get much more for your car if you sell it privately, although I guarantee that you wont have as easy of a time selling it as Pete335 did.

I've sold many cars, and the time/hassle of selling it will depend on many factors including the condition of your car, options, price, and your location.

But you can always put an ad out and see what interest you get, then decide from there.

Carmax is also a good "Plan B."

Apply for a duplicate title, check with Car Max and see if you can sell it yourself, sometimes it's as easy as a " For Sale By Owner " sign on the car.Toyota's are usually easier to sell if they're priced farily....
