K&N Air Filters
Hey guys,
the 335i needs and oil service soon and recently I've been looking at a K&N air filter as a potential upgrade. On the website's HP calculator it says the car will gain 33HP cuz of the twin turbos! I highly doubt a $100 filter would do that. It also claim sound & fuel economy will also have a potential boost. I was just wondering if any of you actually have one or have any info. about the true gains/benefits. The thing is I wanna upgrade my power by a bit but I feel like exhaust or chip is a little too extensive/expensive. PS - what is the cheapest online source for M6 reps and the M aero lip for the coupe? |

I thought K&N filters were not good for our cars because the oil can grime up the mass flow sensor. Do yourself a favor and search this topic before you "upgrade".

I've got one. Modest to no performance increase.
Although, you never have to replace your filter again. Long run, saves you money. WORTH IT.

K&N may give you slightly better throttle response so don't expect super gains... the up side is cleaning doesn't take too long but I'd let it dry for a bit after cleaning and oiling before reinstalling it back on the car.

You're right !
I've put my staggered setup the wrong way, and now my car hits 100 mph in reverse ! Jokes aside, you may have a slight benefit if you do other upgrades but I too highly doubt you'll see an improvement you can actually feel ... Haven't bought mine yet, but planning to do so for the same reason e90david335i gave.

You won't get that kind of power out of an air filter replacement but I would suggest checking out the aFe filters instead. I have found that the urethane around the K&N filters drips down into the filter element which can block flow

I've used K&N for the past 8 years on two different cars. I was meticulous with the maintenance of the filters. In the end:
* You get slightly better throttle response, nowhere near the advertised gains. * There will be a very slightly noticeable sound increase from engine. * Over time, no matter how well you think you cleaned that filter, it will start restricting airflow. In the end you will be forced to replace the filter in 2-3 years. * You should consider gutting and smoothing out your the inside of your air box. |
