320d Oil Consumption

This is my first ever diesel car so it is taking a wee bit of getting used to.

Under the bonnet there is a badge stating that I should check the oil every 1000 kms. I bought some of the recommended Castrol gear(at great expense)but when I spoek to the BMW stealers they said don't touch the engine. They said there is an electronic warning light that will tell me when the oil is low. I thought this sounded insane. Why would I leave it until the warning light comes on? Anyway, how often do you find yourself topping up the oil in your 320d? Do you find it goes through a lot of oil?
