Is this a normal sound for a BMW engine?
Hi folks. I am a new BMW convert. I have driven Jaguars for the past few years and finally decided to buy a BMW after seeing the new E90. Glad I did, I have a 325 Auto which I picked up last week.
Having been used to the roar of a Jag engine, I am not sure if my BMW sounds normal. Here is a description of the noise that bothers me: When I am starting to go from a stop I can hear a distinct "whining" noise as I push the gas pedal. I hear the same noise when I take my foot off the gas to slow down the car in the 40-50 MPH. It seems to me I am hearing the Auto Trany do it's work but I want to know if this is normal or not? Thank you for your time. |

Well I can hear it everytime if there is no music playing in the car. I did not notice the sound when I had my test drive but we were talking and the radio was playing, so I can not tell.
I am going to go to the dealer for software updates and such after my breakin period is done. Just wondering if others have noticed such a sound. |

The engine is supposed to sound like: ruuuuuuummmmm babababa as you accelerate and then lift off... Does it sound like this?
That's for the gasser. Don't know what the diesel sounds like. Never heard one.

HAHA! We got a happy bunch here :rocks:
The problem is I hear the whining noise when I get my foot off the gas to slow down, that's why I think it's the auto trany shifting down or up that makes the noise, it might be normal but I never had something like this with any of my auto cars before. Anyway if nobody has noticed it here, it's probably a BMW feature I gotta get used to |

Depends on the RPM. There is a distinct metallic, mechanical whine that the inline 6 puts out. Since the exhaust note in the E90 (even my 330i) is woefully subdued, you can really hear this under acceleration and sometimes deceleration if you turn off the stereo.
I would take it to the dealer and ask one of the service techs to come for a short ride with you around the block and ask their opinion. As long as they don't think there is a problem, you should be OK. Your salesperson could probably even tell you, but that might be a stretch depending on your salesperson. Most likely, as long as there is no service warning showing on the LCD between the speedo and tach, you should be fine. |

My 330i auto has a mild sound to it. It is a good sound. I noticed it the day I got it. When I hit the gas I can not decied whether to listen to the 5.1 audo or the wonderfull hum of the supper sight drive train

my car does the exact same thing!!!!! i was actually gonna post today!
the only thing is i dont REMEMBER hearing it the first 3 days i had the car, but i also probably played music about that whole time. but i definitely hear it now. it doesnt really sound like a bad noise, but i thought one of the reasons i just spent 38k on a BMW was because it was MORE quiet in the cabin. the other weird thing, is i figured if i put the window down, i would hear it coming in more, but i dont, its coming like through the firewall. weird

first day of driving mine and i notice the whine u guys describe. it's most noticeable for me when i let off the gas but i think that it's coming form the auto tranny downshifting. perhaps you guys don't notice but i feel that the e90 auto quite frequently downshifts, so much that usually when u let off the gas, u can feel some engine braking like you do in manual cars. in other auto cars i've driven, there's no engine braking whatsoever and the car seems to move at the same speed until u hit the brakes.

I wish the E90 cabin were not so quiet.
Now I have to put my head out of the window while driving so I can hear the music from the engine. |
