The only TRUE 3" downpipe for the N54
Here it is, a REAL and true 3" downpipe all the way back to the midpipes, which I also have coming in a 3" flavor that delete the secondary cats and taper down to 2.5". This gives better flow for the exhaust gasses as they exit the turbos allowing more time for the exhaust to cool off and shrink in volume. Instead of forcing the exhaust down to 2.5" in the down pipe, this gives the exhaust even more time to cool and then tapers to 2.5" at the end of the midpipes. I'm also hoping to have a test pipe installed on the midpipes so I can just pop in my old cats that have been fitted with 3" flanges on each end for emission testing.
Take special note, these do NOT taper to 2.5" on the downpipe whatsoever and require a 3" midpipe. Here is the mid pipes in progress - 3" tapering to 2.5" New: Last edited by klipseracer; 04-01-2010 at 03:13 PM.. |

And I don't think anyone in here can dispute the fact that better flow with bigger snails = great. |

The only difference between these and other downpipes is that they are wider at the ends. And from what I've seen while under there should be sufficient room. The midpipes that are coming is where my questions are. They are supposed to be test fit before sent to me on Wednesday.

Now they need to just make exhaust systems that have exhaust flanges to fit the DPs....While many exhaust have been on the market already, going full 3in on the dps it will not work for many people and i think while the idea is great, there wont be too many sales of the DP...For you, your going a total custom exhaust it will be nice to see what you come up with...You have done a great job getting your car in the shape that its in now!!

This is pretty much the idea. The point of going back to 2.5" almost solely rests on the fact that unless you're pushing 600whp+ full 3" probably isn't necessary and will incur some losses in torque. The fact that I can slap the stock exhaust right on to this and even the bmw performance exhaust is one more reason to do it. I can't wait to find out what this sounds like coupled with the stock exhaust.

Currently these are made by an existing downpipe manufacturer, however they are currently a one-off product done by request. This also applies to the midpipes. Once they are all installed and everything I'll report back and maybe there will be enough interest to justify making a marketable product.
