Is it possible to dismount run flats without damaging the wheels?

I have an 08 E91 with sports package. 17" run flat tires came on the vehicle. wheel style 161.

I had to have a tire removed and patched when the car had 1000 miles on it. Even after asking to be extremely careful a tire shop scratched and chipped the wheel.

30k miles later I bought a set of michelins (not run flats). I asked every shop in town and finally found one that swore they could do it without damaging the wheel and that they had "the best" equipment. Of course they still said accidents happen so they don't guarantee their work.

long story short they scratched the crap out of all four rims.

Should I be pissed at this shop or are run flats just that hard to deal with?

Looking for an answer backed up by someone that has experience with run flats. They are considerably different than a standard tire.

I had my Bridgestone RE050A RFT dismounted and Michelin PS2 ZP RFT put on my 162 wheels without any issues. The shop mentioned that the lower profile 255/35/18 rear was a pain to mount but they still managed to do it without scratching my wheels. This was a Tires Plus in Suwanee, GA.

I'd assume 17" tires are even easier to mount so yes, you have every right to be mad at the shop.

I'm on my 3rd set of RFT, no scratches (from mounting) on stock 16". They are a BITCH to get off since the sidewalls are so stiff.

Well, its $75 each to have my wheels repaired. I hate being the dick with the BMW, but I feel like these shops should really have the proper equipment to dismount run flats if they are going to charge me $180 bucks to mount and balance some tires.

Your answer was vague. Just looking for a more detailed experience. Did you have your run flats dismounted and no issues?

I have heard of people having this issue before. I purchased a set of used style 230 wheels and the wheel has one chip on the inner portion of the lip can't really tell though. From what I can tell it was caused by the removal of the RFT tire, they are 19's so I can only imagine how hard it may be. Then again it was done by the dealer from what the seller told me!!!

mine are 17's and 40 and 45 series... so yeah I would think a 19 would be harder. They really didnt a # on the wheels. basically made it look like I am an idiot that drives up against the curb when I park.

Once upon a time I used to mount tires on wheels. Mounting a truck tire is a totally different story than a low profile performance car tire. A lot less give and space to work with on a car tire unless it's a small shitty civic wheel. Just make sure whoever does it uses the plastic coated mounting tools, not the all steele ones like they use on a Kia.

The only difference with dismounting runflat tires is that they have stiffer sidewalls than conventional tires. Runflat tires are becoming much more common, so most reputable shops should be able to handle them without damaging wheels.

car-x here in Iowa City is the authorized tirerack install shop and they scratched up one of my wheels..

I'll probably call the owner of the shop that F'ed them up.

I had 2 experiences with removal and mounting of Bridgeston Potenza RFTs on my car. The 1st time BMW of Austin scratched 2 wheels. They didn't tell me until I checked my car. I had to make them repair it. The 2nd time Discount Tires did it perfectly. I tip the guy $10 in advance to ensure a good result.

That's a lot of money. BMW charged me $21/tire to mount and balance while Discount Tires charged me $18.50/tire.

If they can't guarantee their work, they shouldn't do it. It is most certainly possible to dismount or mount runflats without damaging the wheel. We have a machine that has limited amount of metal contact points to minimize the likelihood of scratching. It happens from time to time, but we will reimburse for repair or replacement when it does.

During a rear wheel change out in a small Idaho town the tire shop used by a BMW dealer damaged my rear wheel (the wheel that had a crack). My Canadian dealer called the wheel BEND and will not give me my money back. I am now fighting this issue (to get my money back ... long story).

I recommend to have tire work done only at BMW if you are dealing with OEM wheels. If BMW damages your wheels then they have to replace them simple and straight forward IMO

I personally just dismounted all of my runflats and put on snow tires on my 18's. We use a new Coats machine that has no contact points on the rim. They are a pain, but with the right equipment, there should be no marks on the rims.
