Hello, new to this forum but thought some of you guys may be interested in this project.

We're in the process of building an E90 race car for the ST class in Grand-Am's Continental Tire Challenge Series for 2011.

Sweet! Will the car be ready this season?

We'll probably have it ready towards the end of the year but doubtful that we'll make any Grand-Am events this season. Our goal is Daytona in 2011.

Once its ready we'll shake it down at a few club events. There is typically a 8-9hr race that NASA puts on at Road Atlanta in Dec. that is a good potential testing date.

Wow, ambitious. What made you choose the E90 platform?

We have a fair amount of experience at the club level and with endurance racing, so feel comfortable in that regard.

The E90 presents some difficulty just in the complexity of the cars electronics. This is very much a grassroots operation we have no 'sponsors', and as a result we'll be attempting to use the stock harness and ECU.

In our favor though we're receiving a fair amount of technical support and direction from the BimmerWorld team that have a ton of experience with the
E90 in both the World Challenge Series and now in Grand-Am ST.

So we're cautiously optimistic.

What are your reasons for choosing an E90 platform over an E92?

You should chat with Tony Colicchio at TC Design Fab (makes custom cages and helps with car set up). He has worked on setting up E90s for track. He is well know here in NorCal in SCCA racing..(he did my custom cage on my Spec Miata back in 2002)

BimmerWorld is doing the cage and fab work.

Which is also a good reason for choosing the E90. A good rule of thumb blazing the trail with a new car = $$$, and time and requires lots of experience. They've figured out most everything on these cars at least that we would ever need to worry about.

We have enough against us without trying to invent new things. The E90 is competitive in the ST class and still has room to grow.

I didn't have the conversation with Grand-Am specifically but I know they're trying to keep the amount of turbo cars to a minimum since maintaining performance parity is harder with these cars (ie its easier to 'accidently' run more boost, etc). Also generally speaking they're trying to make things clear for the casual fan so running two 4 door BMWs, or cars that look very similar can be confusing.

So in summary - competitiveness, less complexity, and staying clear of pioneering things both car-wise and rule-wise.

2 door chassis means a longer rectangular opening, 4 door chassis has a beam at the B pillar to support the "box." Go look up chassis rigidity numbers for E46 sedan vs. coupe. Sedan chassis rigidity is 14,000Nm, while coupe rigidity is 12,500Nm. Since the E90 and E92 are both 50% stiffer than their E46 counter-parts, you do the math...
