Help...engine shaking.

Hey everyone

Quick questions for all of you. I was just doing my first wash of my 335 and while trying to make the car look absolutely gorgeous I decided to clean the exhaust tips, but my cousin thought it would be wise to spray water in both exhaust tips.

Now, the engine shutters when it starts, and shakes when at idle throwing a SES light.

What should I do? Let it run to purge the water?

Water injection works fine.

If injected in the right end.

This is such a PITA...I guess it's just a waiting game. The water can't stay there forever.

I can't imagine that water worked its way up to the sensors.. I would let it run and evaporate and see what happens.

How much water are we talking here? I am no mechanic or engineer, but I am not sure a little spray of water would cause the symptoms you describe. I would think the only thing the water could have really damaged is the catalytic converter.

Most people have had the shaking symptom as a result of bad injectors - do a search.

Could just be a coincidence that the injectors went at the same time as this cousin of yours had his bright idea.

I turned the car on to take it out of the garage, and everything was perfect.

We started to wash the car, then I went inside to get another sponge. Meanwhile he said he sticked the hose in each tailpipe for a few seconds. I then freaked out, turned on the engine, and had the most gut wrenching feeling when the car threw a SES light.

The car shakes when the AC is off, but when on it idles semi-normal. Exhaust was throwing out some water, but that has stopped. I'm just hoping that the heat from the exhaust will evaporate the water sooner rather than later and that nothing is damaged.

It was a really silly move by your cousin. You may want to stick the hose into his tailpipe and let it flow for an hour. Hopefully nothing is damaged and it will clear itself. In worts case a treatment like this may fill cylinders with water and bend the connecting rods. Good luck though and hopefully it turns out well for you.

Would it be a bad idea for me to get an air compressor and blow the water out?

That's what I've done for about 25 mins...I'll let it idle longer.

Will the SES light disappear on it's own, or do I have to clear it with the BT for it to go away?

Check with BT cable and clear codes if possible. Perhaps some O2 sensor is damaged. They are heated to 700 Deg C or something like that during cold-start and may not like being water filled.

I dunno dude...moment of stupidity I guess.

I've had it running for a total of 1 hour...should I let it keep going or call it quits and call BMW?

I really really don't want to get a huge bill for this.

for what is worth,

good chance he filled up the mufflers with water .. and so, it might take a little while for it to clear out.. if the 02 sensor is getting a lot or water vapor around it it may be setting a fault for readiness.. if its temporary, the light will go away, if the sensor has been damaged, then the fault will not clear with out replacing the defective part..

that will be a hard one to explain to your local service department .. maybe have your cousin explain the logic behind it ..

Have u revd the engine or just let it idle? I would call BMW. Is it possible for the engine to seize? Last idea of mine, water causing weak sparks, blow the water out of the recesses?

I'm about to check the codes now....lets hope for the best.

I don't even want to know what was going through his mind. He feels worse than I do about it so I'm keeping cool.

The car is drivable, only really slow because of the limp.

He's family try to make it out to be no big deal for his sake. My pop curbed my rim on the 2nd day I had my car. I yelled at him and I felt worse for embarasing him.

wow...all six cylinders Mis-firing.....I think the water may have caused some issues with your O2's causing all the mis-fires, not sure what to make of the VANOS error though.
