What is the best, cheap clutch

I am a college student and my clutch is going out. I need something that will be good for a touch over 400hp and as inexpensive as possible. I will also be doing the install my self (at a shop with the guys that work there) so advice is also appreciated. I am thinking about an ACT 6-puck or Clutch Masters fx400

Clutch Masters is unsurpassed in quality. If you are only going for 400 hp though, you may not need a puck clutch. They have such a variety of clutches that it is worth calling them and asking what fits your needs best. I think there is also a STETT group buy on Clutch Masters stuff so it is a good time.

I'd go with the ACT with the street disc. I'm pretty sure most of Spec's clutches require the use of their flywheel whereas the ACT will work with the OEM dual mass flywheel.

+1. I have an ACT 2600 with street disc on my Eclipse GSX. It has seen many AWD launches in the high 5k rpms and is still going strong. I don't know about the N54 drivetrain, but before the ACT street disc I had a 6-puck with a 2100 pressure plate (also ACT) and it destroyed the input shaft on that transmission. The 2600 with street disc has been an excellent clutch. Also, back then, Clutch Masters wasn't making a good product for DSMs, but things could have changed.

I wouldn't go with the 6 puck or 4 puck on a daily driven car unless you're planning on exceeding 450whp. The street disc will have less chatter & easier engagement with slightly more pedal pressure.

OP, one other thing to keep in mind is the Clutch Master clutches will always have less pedal pressure than the others because they are the only company that i know of who changes the fulcrum point. This allows stiffer pressure plates with less pedal pressure than the competition.

I drove an Evo with ACT 6 puck once around a parking lot and it was BRUTAL. I couldn't imagine driving that thing for a day, let alone every day.

clutch masters FTW. You might spend a little bit more but you're gonna get more too.

I dont mind a stiff pedal, I had a 85 911 that I drove every day for a few years and while one leg was larger than the other it didnt bother me one bit. My main concerns are which one will hold up better and wont require another fly wheel. Also is it necessiary to resurface it and how do you do so?

We have a number of great clutch options, and re-honing the OEM flywheel is included in the price to boot We also have a core exchange program if you are in a hurry.

Pm me some prices and please explain to me how one would resurface the fly wheel and what a shop ought to charge.

Yes, for the flywheel, so you don't have to wait 2 weeks.

The resurfacing is a specialized process, that is done by the clutch manufacturer we work with. PM Sent

ACT HDSS. You,ll love it.Smooth take off, flawless function and can hold your torque. If you go with a puck or dual disc you will hate driving your car.Trust me.Research,Research before you buy.

Dan, out of curiousity have you driven a Clutch Masters puck yet? I am running a bear of a clutch in my car and the daily driving is no issue at all. Their altered fulcrum approach to the pressure plate changes things considerably. I can probably hold close to 900-1000 rwtq on me car and I can still slip the clutch.

PMed you back.Besides the ACT,look into Centerforce and see if they make a clutch for the 335.I had one in my 63 Dodge 440 for over 10 years and it held the power and torque of a mopar big block with over 500 ft lbs trq all that time without so much as a hiccup.
