dealers screwing me, need a little help, failed boost pressure sensor

gotta half check engine light not long ago, was told my fuel pump was failing

dropped of at the dealership yesterday, removed my SSTT but left my dci in thinking there's no way someone could be stupid enough to deny me warranty work over a few f*cking air filters

they call just now and say boost sensors bad, quoted $735!! and said no warranty cause of cone filters

told them not to touch it, i'll be there asap to pick it up, SA starting his sales pitch trying to talk me out of working on my own car of course, said once the sensor is replaced there's some programming that has to be done to like register the new sensor with the ecu

is that true? do i need to buy a bt scanner?

is this boost sensor the tmap sensor where my sstt plugs in?

any help/info much appreciated i'm gonna search tischer for the part

Remove your intake and go to another dealer

How does that work? If you are flagged does that mean your power train warranty is void becasue I never got anything in writing.

You should ask him to be more specific with the name of the sensor, when you pick up the car. It could either be the "Charge air duct pressure sensor" or the "Intake manifold charge air pressure sensor"

With the Dual Cone Intakes that you have, replacing either sensor is about a 10 minute job. Go find the part prices at getbmwparts.

All you need is a BT tool to clear the fault memory when you are done.

In the Bentley Manual (pages 130-43 and 130-44) it shows a tightening torque value of both of those sensors as 3.5nm.

The first sensor I mentioned is attached to the charge air duct, with two bolts, near where it hooks into the intake manifold (it's on the back side of the pipe - towards the front windshield), the second is attached with 2 bolts directly on the intake manifold.

See if someone in the mid-atlantic section has a spot on their BT tool for you to borrow. I'm in MD but have used all three VIN slots at the moment.

* Buy the Bentley manual from amazon. Best $85 or so I ever spent on the car.

Go to realoem.com to confirm this for your production month and year. For my car (prod 04/2007) #6 on this diagram looks like the 1st sensor I mentioned (about $100): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...85&hg=13&fg=20

#8 on this diagram looks like the 2nd sensor I mentioned that is attached to the intake. About another $100 from tischer:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...73&hg=11&fg=40

So if you need only one of them, parts will be $100. Labor is 1/2 an hour max, and someone might lend you a BT tool to reset your codes = $100 Total.

Stories like this is why my car has never been to the dealer except the day it got off the delivery truck from the VPC 3 years ago.

I just recently replaced my TMAP sensor myself......

Paid for it out of pocket and installed it.

I think the dealer is jerking you around by indicating that some programming or calibration needs to be done.

I referred to the BMW TIS cd in regards to installation guidelines and it was a straight swap out.

The only thing they mentioned was to rub a little anti-seize compound on the rubber o-ring.

No reference to software calibration at all.

Now injectors.......that's a different story!

I think I may have had the same problem last year. I had a jb+ and my check engine came on and would go in and out of limp mode. I removed jb+ and took car to dealer (it was still otherwise stock). SA said something about fuel pressure sensor failing (i know it wasn't the tmap). anyway i asked if it was a common issue he said no it's strange, but didn't ask if I had mods or tune. anyway they replaced it no questions asked. i do remember car being @ the dealer for extra couple days due to them having to load a software for the new sensor (not progman).

anyway, good luck.

If it was one of the two sensors above, then they just kept your car longer because they had other priorities and needed something to tell you.

picked the car up, the scan read it wasn't the tmap but the other one, so as far as im understanding things its the sensor that mounts directly to the intake manifold.

now my question is, can running oiled filters actually cause the sensor to fail? or running a tune somehow damage it?

i've heard scatter stories over the years of people heavily over-oiling filters and then causing problems with MAF's, which i thought most of the time you just had to clean the little metal element inside the sensor with rubbing alcohol.

figure it's worth a try before i order a new one

oh and i'm NOT black flagged with my warranty, just said they wouldn't replace this particular part under it due to it being directly in line with an aftermarket part.

think i figured it out, i believe it was actually just the clip being broken on my tmap (previous owner) letting the plug wiggle loose that was throwing the code, re-installed the SSTT this morn and secured it with a zip tie and voila, codes gone

still have a service engine soon light but thats just the car storing that there was a check engine light thrown recently in memory correct?

heading out shortly so i'll see if the car actually runs normally

Excellent. Yep - try to get ahold of a BT tool. If you are keeping the car for a year or more it would be worth it to buy the enthusiast version. You can always resell it for a good amount later.

BMWNA is a joke when it comes to stuff like that. If it was a Honda or Toyota there would be no issues.

Good luck with fix.
