Question Xenon headlights 'shaking'

Just got back from a BMW CCA Houston chapter rural drive event in Houston today.

As with all these roadtrip/drive events, we are requested to keep our headlights on, so the lead & chase cars know who is with the group.

When we stopped, the person in front of me said that my headlights (especially passenger side) was 'vibrating' with each and every bump in the road. It was almost like the unit had some 'play' in it, and might need to have some fasteners tightened.

The only time I noticed this, is when exiting my garage, the Auto headlamps get turned on, and the headlight cut off beam 'vibrates' when I roll out of my garage and hit the bump that seats the garage door. (I haven't done much night driving since my 30 days of ownership of this vehicle)

Anyone heard of this, or any similar issues with the headlights? TSBs?

(my car is a '08, with only 13k miles).

Isn't that the auto-level feature? Mine bounce around too.

I thought there was TSB around for this thing. Where they add an extra support bracket to stop the light from shaking. Haven't seen anyone recently with this issue but that is the first thing that popped into my mind when reading what happened.

I don't think this is 'normal'.

Did an internet search and found only two TSB listings:

- 63 10 07 E/92/93 Oct '07...Headlight Vibrates when Vehicle in Motion

- 63 13 07 E90/91/92 Aug '07...Headlight Vibrations

http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B631007g.htm

However, my manufacturing date is 4/08 - so does not apply to my vehicle.

Wonder if there is another TSB?

Anybody??

Mine do it too but it's not so bad to the point that it distracts me. My poor E92 is just subjected to Louisiana roads.

Hey guys,

I dropped off my car today to have the 'up/down' shaking / vibrating of my xenons checked out. They vibrate all the time and I feel that's all I'm focusing on when I drive at night. In fact, it is so excessive that I even notice them shake during smooth gear shifts. Drives me absolutely bananas.

Anyways, did anyone save a soft copy of the tsb link above that they can share? The link doesn't seem to work anyone. I may need to show a printout of it to the service techs in case they try to give me the 'it's normal' crap.

Cheers!

I noticed the same thing with my 08 335i e90. You can see the cutoff line vibrating over every little bump in the road at night.

I haven't said anything to BMW about it yet, but I should as my warranty is set to expire this year with all the mileage I'm putting on.

Normal. My 09 did this ever since it was new. One of the first things I noticed when I drove my new car at night.

Finally found time to give my update. So as expected the dealer said they didn't see anything abnormal. I mentioned the tsb and apparently it doesn't apply to the newer models (LCI) which I have yet to verify that but don't have a copy of the tsb.

The techs took the bumper off and verified that the light assemblies were tightened properly. I do have to say that it feels less shaky now. Maybe I'm just imagining things.

But it is disappointing that there is 'no fix' to this. I'm hoping that once I install non runflats it might help somewhat. I also noticed that the lights shake less when I turn the light nob to the right (non-adaptive mode).

This is not normal or due to headlight leveling. I wish people that don't know what they are talking about would stop talking from their ass.

Check the bottom bracket screw on headlight. If its only the passenger headlight and If you have hands small enough you can reach the torx screw and tighten it without removal of the bumper cover. That will solve the issue.

Have to bring this up years later hehe. Does anyone have a picture or diagram they can post as to where this screw is. My shaky xenons make me feel like I installed a cheap ebay pair when on a bumpy freeway.

Would be cool to know as well though I think I'm out of luck as I have an LCI E90.

The last time I had the lights checked out, I was informed that something inside the actual headlight assembly was broken which was causing the shake. Since the headlights are sealed shut and need to be baked, I decided against it and have been dealing with it since. If it's a relatively simple fix as a loose screw, it's worth a shot I suppose. It's embarrassing to drive around while having my headlights bounce around.

Mine shakes too on mildly uneven roads on freeway and stuff.... Recently I found out there a rear adaptive sensor on the rear control arm also (just like the front sensor) to sense pitch I assuming to trigger vertical correction for our adaptives. But, when I found out I noticed the one end of the seńsor was not screw into on the car frame but only to the control bolt was. So I screwed the bold back into the car frame end thinking that had been the issue causing the shakiness and that becusse it was the due to a dangling around loose rear sensor. But nope, That didnt fix the shaking but instead now my headlight are aimed too high. My car is lower on kw so I assume some tuning of the sensor is required. Mounting that rear sensor did do something but it didn't fix the shakiness I'll tell u that because just easier tonight on the freeway driving around I still noticed shakiness with overly high aimed headlight.

Well I am going to pull the rear wheel out again tomorrow ( by the way the front and rear sensors on the drivers side ) and play around, plus check all the mounting brackets too I can I find all of them lol

I noticed this on my last car. Turns out both headlights had hairline cracks in the plastic brackets. Had to push on them a bit to figure it out.

I noticed that too when you push on the headlights... They wiggle and jiggle lol. So what happened did you replace the brackets ? If so which ones ? There seems to be one on the left , two on to and two facing the kidney grill, I think

I'm assuming the headlight shouldn't shake when you press on them, the headlights on my other cars doesnt do that.

I left as is and no longer have the car. I tried epoxy on the cracks but it didn't hold.
