Question Should i sell the 335i and buy an m3?

Hi guys

i was looking to modify my 335i to make it around 420bhp. The cost of everything i was looking to do probably adds up to around 6k or so.
If i sold my 335i, and spent the money towards an m3 it could work.
What would you do?

I`m thinking the same, should i sell my 335d and get the m3. Have been offered £27300 for my jan 08 e92 with most options and only 14.5k miles.

I'd do what I did. Thought about modding the 335d, buying a new 335i or a 2nd hand M3.

Sounds like a good price - is that private?

To get 420 bhp you need:

- A tune (remap or piggyback) @ £500
- FMIC @ £600
- Intake @ £100
- Catless downpipes @ £500
- Oil catch can @ £150

For under £2k you can get a pretty conservative 420 bhp.

Obiously if you want to handle and stop like an M3 you are looking at:

- Brakes (pads, pipes & fuid) @ £500?
- LSD @ £2k
- Suspension (spings/dampers or coilovers, M3 ARBs, M3 subframe bushes, M3 wishbone and control arms) @ £2k

Even then it won't be an M3 - but you can pick and choose to get the outcome you are looking for. £3k can buy some pretty significant upgrades for your 335i.

Yeah thats a private sale to someone who is fussy about spec/condition/colour etc, he has seen a few in dealers for about £29k but condition was an issue aswell as dealer arrogance.

The modding route will get you a unique car, powerful and fast. The M3 is a purpose built super saloon. The M3 will be the better car.

Id buy a C63 AMG. But ive been repping these for well over 2 yrs now.

M3 will work out cheaper in the long run

If you were to change ECU, suspension, exhaust etc, etc your car may well pump out 420bhp and be nearly as quick as an M3 but it will be worthless on the p/x market. Those mods will be worth nothing to most and your ability to sell the vehicle when you need to will probably be hampered. Plus your buyers market will be very very small. Buyers will also be aware that extended warranty will be difficult/impossible to come buy.

So overall you car may be worth less than a standard, well specced 335i!!

The M3 will hold its value a lot better, so your total cost of ownership over lets say 2-3 years (provided you buy used at a good price) will be less than your modded 335i

OR

sod it and get a C63, remap it and take some imodium

I know what you are saying, but this is not necessarily the case. Many mods are easy to remove, return back to stock and sell on. FMIC, DPs, catch can, springs / dampers, intake, piggyback will only take a few hours to remove and install stock items where necessary.

It is not a good idea to sell a car modded, as mentioned above, the market is very small and the car will be worth more standard - but well selected mods can give the required outcomes and reduce the overall cost of ownership significantly when sold on at 50% rrp.

On the other hand an LSD, upgraded turbos etc are big investments and not an easy job to remove - these items really won't command any value when you come to sell the car, so choose these items wisely.

The other obvious costs to consider are fuel and road tax.

Note - the M3 will still be the better car.

I'd stick with the 335i, however, i'd only put a remap on it.

That should be good for 370bhp, you torque level will be higher than the M3, your running costs will certainly be lower.

try here:
http://www.evo-s.co.uk/shop/6_2372_2945_3412_2978/335i

Then pocket the rest of the money!

If you already own a 335i then going to an M3 aint that big a leap it would seem to me, get the remap and start saving for that c63 amg, unless you need a track tool then disregard everything i've just said

thanks for the comments.
dxb335d.. why will it be faster.
My plans for the 335i would be
Intercooler (done)
airfilter (done)
downpipes
exhaust
remap to 420bhp.
Lowering springs and shocks (done)
arbs
Quaife diff.

Ive probably forgotton some stuff.

The torque buddy, a re-mapped 335d can keep up with an M3 on the road just about.

A 420HP 335i has massive torque and also equiv power to the torque-less M3.

The M3 has to be stirred so hard to be quick.

On the drag strip, it would rape the M3. On the road also.

The track, the M3 would win. 335i woudl need LSD and coilovers at least.

hmm

I think i might keep the 335i then. I went to bmw today and they didnt want to offer me much, based on the autovogue kit etc.

A Bit of a longshot. But does anyone have a highly modified 335i they could give me a ride in?
