Dumb iPhone > BMW question?

My missus is using my 335d at the moment and she asked if she could use her iPhone to listen to music via the car and of course i said she could.
I came unstuck when actually trying to do this tho

In the glove box theres a USB connector i tried but that just charged the phone.

In the centre console (after opening it), theres a 3.5mm front aux socket. Am i correct in thinking that i need a cable to plug into this and on the other end, a connector that plugs into iPhone headphone socket?

Or is it 3.5mm jack from BMW to the connector on iphone where you charge it?

The USB connector in the glove box is only for uploading and backing up the iDrive...it can't be used for music playback

In order to get the songs from your iphone onto the iDrive, you either need the USB connector in the armrest (6FL) with the BMW Y-cable, or you can connect via the 'AUX' 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable which can be picked up from most places for a few quid and plugs into the iPhone headphone socket on the top.

With the second option, just select 'AUX' on the menu, select the song on the iphone, and it should work...

^ as above, 100% correct.

I would recommend picking up a "kensington liquidAUX if you want to do this regularly. It sits in the armrest and charges / pipes music to the car AUX channel at the same time.

You also get a wireless remote which you can put on the steering wheel (well mine was sat on the wiper blade controls) to change track, volume and turn shuffle on or off.

Good setup for £35 imo..

I have one of those if you need one. Never been opened. (Late night Ebay purchase!)

You can also get (eg ebay) connectors which go from the iphone 24 pin bottom connector to the 3.5mm aux jack in the arm rest. This is what i use and they're supposed to give better sound quality than going from iphone headphone jack. Dunno if they do as never used headphone connection.
