Newbie Question - DRLs

Hi everyone. I've just inherited a 2008 E91 320d ES as a company car (grrrr - why didn't they order the SE?). First ever BMW and I have a couple of questions which the user manual would probably answer if I had one!

I had a play with the menus and found what looks like DRLs. With lights switched on it pulls up what the at a glance guide describes as "Individual Vehicle Settings". This shows a lock and headlights - looks like I can switch lights on or off with the doors locked or unlocked.

So is this DRL and why can't I see it working? Tried switching both locked and unlocked to lights on - do I then have to leave the lights switch on either sidelights or dipped? I tried this as well, and the lights stayed on when I got out and locked it.

Sorry for the stupid questions - like I say, new to BMW with no user manual...

If the DRLs are on, they come on when the engine is started with the light switch at off.

Here's a picture of the menu:

Whichever option I select the lights are definitely off unless I switch them on manually. And the same for the little unlocked icon. So what is this option supposed to do?

Hi

You may be able to download a PDF of the manual. Someone has referred me to this for another issue.

I think this is the "see you home" setting for the headlamps, when you like shut the car off with the headlamps on, they stay on for 30/40 secs or so.

OK, I will see if they stay on when I go and lock it up. If it is this, why would it have an unlocked setting too?

EDIT - got it from the American manual here

Its lights flashing to confirm when you lock/unlock.

Have also spotted that with the light switch left on dipped headlights they switch off completely when you lock up. Which means I can effectively run with dips on all the time and never have to twiddle the switch. Good!

I know daytime lights are a debatable issue in some quarters. I prefer more light than less light and if that means having my lights on then thats fine.

You seem to be saying you have to switch the DRLs on manually. This can't be done as it is a setting from the menu.

The DRLs are at least twice as bright as the sidelights - which is what I'm assuming you are switching on manually.

Nope, I saw what I thought was DRLs on one of the menus and wondered why they weren't working! I'm driving an 08 ES and don't have them. However, I can leave my dipped lights switched on all the time, so that'll do instead!

Sorry if I have confused anyone, like I said at the beginning its my first BMW and I haven't got an owners manual (have found one online since)
