Question Is there a service bulletin for the auto-folding mirrors?

On my E90 335xi, I fold the mirrors in with the button every time I park the car. For the first time, yesterday when I walked up to the car and unlocked the driver's door with the key fob (no comfort access), the door unlocked, but I then heard and observed the driver's mirror attempt to fold inward, even while it was already folded up. It made clicking and whirring noises, and after 5 or 6 seconds, it stopped.

Mirrors work fine, though. I was worried it would self-destruct, but it hasn't happened after a couple more fold/lock/unlock cycles and the mirrors act as if nothing's wrong.

I did a search on the forum and it seems that some folks have had problems with the mirrors folding all the way *outward*, but never inward when already fully retracted. The odd thing is I simply pressed the unlock button once, briefly... didn't hold it or anything. Not sure why the mirror would have been doing a darn thing at that moment.

Does anyone know of a service bulletin (SI B ...) for the power folding mirrors that might address this? Thanks!

Sounds like it was just an isolated incidence and just some weird electrical glitch.

I'm having the same problem as well.

The first thing I noticed was, with the body of the mirror in the proper place, I was unable to adjust the driver's side mirror upward, so I wasn't getting a full view of the road on my side. The dealership told me to use the 'fold' button a couple times and it would be fine. When I folded them, the driver's side indeed tried to keep closing after it was already against the window, and clicked and whirred like yours. Then when it stopped and I pressed the button again, it when past the normal driving position and was nearly parallel to the street. I had to close and open them a couple times, and finally put my hand out and stopped it in the driving position when it was trying to go past it.

Mine is out of warranty so I'm not going to the dealership for help, but I was also wondering if others had the same problem, and now I know there is at least one other.

Any help out there for us?

Not really related...actually not related at all but I was just driving and thought this was really cool. I came up to a light I go through all the time and people who are unfamiliar with the light don't know that they can use the shoulder to pass people who are making left turns. Well this girl was on her phone and kinda blocked my way though. I slowly crept past her and folded my mirrors in and then out. I was about an inch from her mirror and about an inch from the curb. lol sorry I know this doesn't contribute at all but I thought it was awesome. lol Otherwise I would have been stuck at the light for another interval.

OP your mirror may have been inadvertently smacked. The mirrors gears are designed to then skip over each other until reaching the next full cycle. At that point they'll catch and everything will line up again. Unless it doesn't...

I'm saying it could just be a justified isolated incident. As for the glitch with it folding while not being prompted; my car with CA had an issue and they re-programmed. Perhaps cars without CA still need software to be prompted when you hit the button.

What about a mirror that goes the past the stop point to point straight forward? A co-worker is having this problem with the driver side mirror. Any ideas?

been discussed before and i myself have had this problem previously.
they replaced the motor completely under warranty.
the most common cause i think is having the mirror smacked, and i think that breaks something inside that tells it where to stop.

to the OP, my mirrors would fold too far out and also retract too far making wierd noises as you have said. the underlying reason is the same i would think. but yours seems like a one off, probably got ur mirror wacked lightly as some other member said. if it becomes consistent you should get the dealer to look at it

It has happened maybe two more times since my OP. We'll see what happens... still a bit of warranty left.

My passenger mirror got messed up somehow, though I suspect foul play. Anyways I've been trying to fix it myself with out having to go into the dealership.

When I press the button it goes all the way up and keeps trying to go and makes a clicking sound. Hell, it sounds like its about to break itself off. When I press the button again it goes too far out, and I have to manually push it back into its normal position.

Now here's the weird part. When I use the BT cable utility to activate the folding mirrors they function just like they are supposed to. That means there is nothing physically broken with it and it just needs to position to be reprogrammed, and that's the part I've been getting hung up on.

Between the forums, Bentley manual, and BT cable, I haven't found a way to re-initialize the mirror positions. If anyone figures it out for the love of God make a thread about it.

haha, i do this whenever i go to the movie theater. they have poles blocking the main drive from the parking area, but i drop my wife off to go buy tickets and i will fold my mirrors in and drive through the poles to go park.

the tsb should fix most mirror folding problems that go off track. it basically resets the home position. now if your mirror itself is off, take it in.

My driver's mirror lately started to fold all the way foward, not sure why. I followed the instructions on the TSB and it fixed the problem.

Cheers,
Robert

OP, I had this problem as well on my E90.....99% chance that your mirror was bumped/pulled while you were parked.

What happened to me was I hit one of those orange road cones while driving and I guess the mirror popped off the track, so it behaved in the exact same manner that you described. It eventually "popped" back into place after I played with it, never had a problem since.

I had this problem too with my 07.

It seems to be related to overuse of the feature, but regardless shouldn't happen.

Only happened on my driver's side...

What can help it is to fold out the mirrors using the button, then fold the mirror manually all the way out in the opposite direction (the wrong way out), then back to normal, then folded in, then outward again.

I found that procedure realigned whatever problem was there. Worked for a few weeks then acted up again. THe problem for me was that it wasn't 100% reproducible so I lived with it.

Talking

Hey Everybody,

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but the link to the TSB below doesn't work. Does anyone have the actual document or a link that is operational? I'd like to try this fix on the funky folding mirror problem before replacing any parts.

Thanks!!

Tom

Any update on the location of the TSB?

I have to adjust my left mirror every time because it loses the home position and then the memory recall puts it in random positions after I get back in the car.
