WOW look at those prices..

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/11120409288/ US$32 vs AUD$82 for screws

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/583207/ US$321 vs AUD$645

Someones making their margin.

Ok if it's under warranty, imagine forking out 3 months after warranty runs out.

Can't find a cylinder head though.

$11k for a cylinder head has to be wrong.

Would be interesting to know what the symptoms were - ticking and losing power?

The cylinder head comes to $5335.20 USD. According to google:

1 Australian dollar = 0.9276 U.S. dollars

Of course as all this is warranty work, I'm assuming you didn't pay a dime, but if I were you I might find a different dealer based on those pricing practices.

Does cutting out a single cancer cure a patient?

From my experience such issues with cars have a tendancy to resurfance over time.

Supporting one rather broad generalisation with another broad and mostly incorrect generalisation is not perhaps such a good argument .

Why should the OP think that this specific problem will recur? Would he not expect the support of BMW Australia (as opposed to the dealer) if it did? I'm happy to be informed with good evidence to the contrary, as no doubt the OP is.

The OP's warranty expires in circa 12 months... Once out of warranty your on your own. Would you roll the dice on it?

That would depend on the facts. Specifically is this a known problem with a certain failure rate? If so, is it truly likely to reoccur or would the replacement parts include updates that would prevent this. As mentioned, if the OP has 12 months warranty left he at least has that long to consider things and, given others experience, I would suggest that the manufacturer may well support its product out of warranty should a known/rectified issue resurface after its expiration.
