LUX H8 recall

so has anyone had problems with their lux? what type of damage does it cause?

this really sucks. i like the output of them too. the fix is to mount the power supply outside the housing....

I just got the recall email as well. As far as I know I have not had any problems with the lux H8, but I will definitely be sending them back. Anybody know how long it will take for them to repair? Gonna be a PITA to take out then re-install later...

I never got a recall email but I bought the first of the H8s that didn't require the wiring harness in September. My first pair failed within an hour probably from overheating. I didn't get my replacement until close to 2 months later.

In January, one of my lights failed again. I spoke to Marc who said he would fix it and he returned my light to me about a week later. I asked him what was wrong with it but he wouldn't say and he sounded a little miffed that I had to send back my lights twice. Not that it was my fault and don't these things have a 1 yr warranty?

yes these do have a 1 year warranty.

Installing these takes only about 2 minutes, luckily they are not like the E90's, where you need to take half the car apart to get at them.

I am honestly sorry about this and we are being pro-active about this as well.

This is too funny. I got a set a few months ago and just installed them Sunday. 2 minutes my ass. So are the newer units going to require a hole being drilled? Is there any info I can read on this?

Hmm.. this is the first I'm hearing about this. What is the recall for?
I purchased my set on Dec 1, 2009. Should I be expecting an email?

There will be no drilling and no modifications to the headlight, housing, or anything. these will remain 100% plug and play

Are all the H8 10xx effected? From the pics from NAM, it shows 1014, but not sure if the whole 10xx series is effect for the H8, the 1 series shows the 1010 though.

I just got mine in the latest batch from like April 1st or so. Are those affected Marc? My car is in the shop for what could be a couple more days or weeks (dont ask......) so I have no way to check, except I just got them from that latest batch.

Question

Hi Marc,

Can you kindly elaborate on how the repair works? I have a 2010 E90 (LCI) with adaptive xenons.

From the PDF I received a link to via e-mail it appears that the issue is that when we tuck the power supply in the headlamp housing there is a possibility that heat damage could occur.

To be honest I felt that this was coming. After I installed these I tested them and really noticed that the heatsink was extremely hot. That is, I couldn't keep my fingers on it without severe pain, i.e. burn. I assumed that the power supply was designed to withstand this temp. In fact, I positioned it so that the hard black plastic would be facing inwards toward the heatsink; the hardened epoxy (or whatever is used to fill / cover components) was facing outboard.

My question is how does the repair work? It sounds like you are extending the wires so that the power supply can sit outside of the housing. If so, how does this work given that the cover has a rubber gasket providing a seal to prevent water / moisture?

Also how is the power supply secured outside of the housing? I'm assuming we don't just let it dangle...

Pretty frustrating. I love the look of these and I would really like to stick with them but further detail would be appreciated.

Thanks -

I think if we all could see a picture of the fixed (modified) unit and see how it is installed it would answer a lot of questions. As the saying goes "a picture is worth a 1000 words".

And if earlier models dont have the overheating problem, why not just replace with the "original" non-overheating power supply?

Marc is excellent at what he does. I'm sure with a little bit of time to think it through and he will have an even better product for your guys.

I am going to get more pictures, but someone else was able to get a quick picture of how to install these differently. The wires will be longer so that the power supply can sit outside the headlight. This picture is only an Example of what it will be like. This picture was taken on a LCI E90. I will have more pictures of an e92 this weekend

That is a long and complicated story.

The "original" power supplies are not available anymore because of a potential legal issue with one of my competitors. I needed to spend additional time and money to have someone else make the power supplies, which are nearly identical, but apparently not exactly the same.

So I just read the .pdf from NaM. It appears my Lux are not affected by this. Now my next question. Are the four bulb H8 significantly brighter than the two bulb? If so, would I be able to upgrade?

Marc, one of my LUX H8s is from October/November. The other one was one you fixed in January. Are they going to be recalled? I haven't gotten any information on a recall.
