Something wrong here. My 97 M3 didn't have free oil changes and yet the OBC wouldn't go off till about 13k and I beat the heck out of it.

Thanks noflash for your information. Many BMW owners who have questioned the E90 maintenence schedule were right on, and the fact that you have many seasoned Techs telling you what/when should really take place is great, especially for the first time BMW owners. Thanks again for your wealth of information!

Mike Miller is awesome -- he is one of many reasons why it pays to join the BMWCCA.
Thanks for the useful post -- It should probably be copied into the DIY and Maintenance forums. I would suggest we work on getting a more specific maintenance schedule for the E90 set up here on the list.

Did the CPO prices and warranties change after the move to Free Scheduled Maintenance? If they did, then this would be evidence that BMW thinks these maintenance schedules are too lax. If not, then it could be that the original schedules were just too strict and designed to milk the customer for money while practicing a strong CYA policy.

Your report is way old.

I dont like the report that you posted. It seems like the independent mechanic dont like the idea of changing the spark plugs every 100,000 miles because they are not doing business.

Changing the oil every 10k or 15k miles is normal these dasy as long as you are using full synthetic oil

Coolant that can last up to 150K miles or 7 year is sold at PepBoys

I'm not planning on changing the fluid on my tranny. It's a lifetime fluid. A friend of mine have 275k miles and have never changed the fluid and the tranny still working fine

Some people want to change more often than the recommended intervals. If it doesn't really make a difference, then it at least lets me sleep better. And anyways, what makes you more qualified than Mike Miller on this topic, especially to say that 99.5% of the report is BS?? Seems like all of your posts are nothing but negativity.

Spark plugs should be replace every 30,000 is
Breaking service at 1,000 is unless you drive a BMW M3

Changing oil between 5 to 7,500 is
Fuel filter change every 30,000 is

Valva Adjusment every 15,000 to 20,000 is

Replace O.E. or O.E.M. BMW poly-ribbed serpentine belts every 60,000 miles is

Replace O.E.M. Continental or Pirelli or original BMW V-belts every 30,000 miles is

Replace “auto store” quality V-belts every 15,000 miles is
Changing engine coolant at two-year intervals is

Replace water and fuel hoses every 150,000 miles sound Fine

Replace power steering every 30,000 miles is

Replace manual gearbox fluid every 30,000 miles is

Replace Brake Fluid one-year brake fluid changes is

i may change my oil more than once @ 15k, maybe twice during that period, but i'll leave the rest of the schedule alone. seems the above list is a bit overkill and would get freakin expensive real quick. maybe 10 years ago that may have applied.

that list was also done in 2002. a lot changes in 3 years

well he also compares a lot of if his advice with what BMW used to recommend before they started paying for maintenance themselves

BMW don't pay the maintenance in the UK.

Most cars in the UK (non-BMW) have a service interval of 12 - 15k miles.

Based on this post, you'd expect a manufacturer of lubricants to recommend very frequent oil changes, maybe even if they were not needed.

I agree that the old 3K mile oil change interval is a thing of the past with synthetics as evidenced by my friends oil analysis here:


But I really still believe it's best to dump the new car oil after 1200 miles or so to get rid of the tiny metal particles.

LOL...Do u even have a clue as to who Mike Miller is?
Do a web search and you'll find plenty of pictures showing E46 engines with sludge. As the article said, if you're not planning on keeping the car over 100k miles, keep to factory intervals.

i agree the 1200 mile change isn't a bad idea, even if its not specifically noted by bmw. can't hurt.
