thats not the law, but a public perception. The law is around 70% actually (the normal for factory tint). Anything added to factory tint is considered illegal.

This goes for any window that is in the driver's main view (so front windows and windshield). Rear windows can be as dark as you want.

False. I know a lot of people who have gotten pulled over with 35% in front. At night, you cant see through.

the actual legal limit is 30% in front, can't have windshield tinted at all (not sure about the doctor's note thing, interesting concept, probably not true though). just because someone got pulled over and ticketed for the tint on the front windows, doesn't mean it isn't legal. in a situation like that, i would have gone to court over it with the printed off paragraph that says 35% is legal, and then had them test it. it the ticket would have been thrown out.

if you are in CA then they can be as dark as you want in the back but any tint in the front is not legal. I do realize there are alot of drivers in cal with tinted widows in the front and nothing ever happens to them but if you do tint the front you are at you own risk.

In California you cannot tint your windshield or front windows without risking the posibility of a ticket.

I am getting mine tinted soon and will do 70% all around (minus windshield) in hopes that they will leave me alone.

Good luck OP!

no its not..the % on window tint is how much light gets in. 30% tint lets 30% of light in...I think you're thinking of it backwards..

I think I did a 25% all around and I have had it for almost 2 years now. I have never been pulled over. To add to that my bmw is black with a black interior.

Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In California, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in.
Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

i stand corrected.

I think the OP is in California. If I am correct on where he is located you cannot legally tint the driver and passengers front windows.

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?
The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:

1.The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
2.If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

As others have said, yes the legal limit in Cali is 70%. Like I said, this is usually very close to the factory tint on windows in front, so anything added is basically illegal.

that blows, especially in CA...FL which is a sunny area like Cali, pretty much lets people tint how they want....

and the winshield has a line on it if you look that measures where u can put the strip to, without actually measuring

Then I dont know. Ive been told by everyone around the valley including a cop that 35% are legal (or they may be ok with it).

I have 20% in the front and 5% in the rear and thank god I have no problems.
