Pictures of 265/40R17 All Around
WARNING!
For those who only care about big wheels and low profile tires, these pictures will disgust you! As I've mentioned in other threads, I stopped thinking about looks and started caring more about lightweight. This is why I am using these 16 pound 17" wheels. Having said that... Even though people say that the 265/40R17 is too big of a tire for an 8.5" wheel, I wanted to try it anyway. Especially when I find that some sites say that it will fit. From everywhere I've looked, the wheel width recommendations are just that...recommendations. I can totally understand that if one gets too wide of a tire and tries to fit it on a narrow wheel then the tire will bulge and wear differently (mainly in the middle), but I really doubt that I will have any problems with this. Why did I go with this size? Because I wanted a tire with a bigger overall diameter than the 255/40R17 tires that I previously had on. I wanted a bigger diameter without sacrifcing contact patch. For example, a 235/45r17 has close to the same overall diameter as the 265/40r17 tire, but I didn't want to go with a narrower tire. Here are some pics

Can you still go lock to lock? Also, what's the weight of the tire wheel combo compared to stock? And lastly, what's the performance advantage of a square vs. staggered setup?

The square setup lessens the understeer.

Nice one! I don't mind they way they look at all.. and its a lot of rubber.
I think you would notice the buldge even more on 18x8.5" rims. It will be interesting to hear how it performs if you are going to track your car. |

it looks great.
FYI, Audi on its Audi Sport Quattro (short wheelbase version of UrQuattro) in 80s has fitted standard 225 section tyre on a x9 rim. Logic says they'd need to be 265 or so but i guess the point is all sorts of combos are out there and are ok to try. Worst thing here is you'll see handling diference and different wear. But you are prepared for it so no worries and enjoy your setup. I'm also running a square setup because I also don't like understeer. I'm thinking of going for slightly chunkier tyres myself.

Thanks guys.
It doesn't feel that different than the 255/40s but maybe it will when they break in.

Just the opposite of stretched tires. I know you're not going for looks, but I like the look of this MUCH better than the stretched look and it gives you a bit of curb protection too. I would think that not only have you lost some weight at the corners but it would also give you a bit of a better ride (perhaps quite a bit) with that much rubber between the rim and the road. Anyhow - I like your thinking Mr. 5, as usual. Keep us posted on your thoughts...
I gotta tell ya though, Bud, your avatar is weird, kinda creepy. I'm guessing it has some meaning for you? |

i think they look cool. I went with a light wheel as well (18.5 lbs all around), I'm more interested in weight than the need for 19's.
Great setup! |

Looks pretty good in my mind. Looks beefy, for lack of another word.
I squeezed 255 on 9 inch rims for my square setup. I didn't think 265 was even possible! How do you find the ride? I feel there is more noise up front, but steering is immediate and crisp. I really don't know whether it's the placebo effect, but braking now is just awesome.

265 with ET40? impressed that it fits. Which shocks and springs do you have. I have 265 on 9x18 and ET25 was needed to clear the strut. Have ET35 in the back as well.

I have the M3 tension rods and wishbone links. Do you? I remember that when I did that, it pushed the wheels out more to the fender. This is probably why they are fitting. I better put this in the initial post. EDIT Never mind. I just found out that the M3 tension arms and wishbone rods do NOT affect the distance from the wheel to the strut.
