Dealer wouldn't upgrade software.

So about a year ago I decided to ask the dealer to update the software on my car. I read around here and a lot of the people south of the border had no issues asking for this to be done. Maybe there is a different set of rules at bmw canada vs. bmw NA. They wouldn't upgrade the software unless there was a reason to. I even asked customer service and escalated it to their supervisor. Basically, they've recieved requests for it, but will not comply unless there is a problem needing fixing.
So after driving a friends newer 09 vs my 08, there is a huge difference. And I definitely want this... My car is still under warranty, never been tuned, and been actually very reliable so far. Except it still has the old version, 29.xx i think but not sure. They are up to something like version 36! Has anyone on here had better luck. I live near toronto. Maybe i could simply state a problem that would get them to update the software. ie. give them a reason to do it under warranty. I was thinking of saying it idles rough, but there won't be any codes stored, because it doesn't idle rough. Thanks for your help everyone.

it is a november 2007 build.

do you have an alarm on the car? if you get one installed they have to upgrade the software automatically! Otherwise, just pay out of pocket to have it done.

Autohaus says they will not update unless your car needs to due to some faults. Otherwise, they will charge.

My suggestion is to call different dealers and see who is willing to do it for free.

If you have 6Fl , just say that your radio is switching from ipod to radio on it's own and not holding the "random" function. Down here, they don't just do the update without a reason normally either, but the 6FL switching was the reason they updated mine (it ws a pain in the neck when it was happening though). Good luck!

Exactly - I can think of 10+ reasons to get the software updated. What it really comes down to is how you sell it to dealer when requesting it.

I have the 6FL, and it actually DOES do that. Just seemed a little petty to bring it to the dealer for that. Not anymore! So they will update everything including the engine module, just to update the ipod? Thanks for the awesome input guys!

No prob
Yes, it's all part of the ISTA/P programming process. You should be updated to 37.x
Remember to be firm and convincing with the SA - You really need to stress the issue and how it impacts you.

When they update the software, is it always to the latest version?

My car was in the shop the other day to replace the rear muffler and on the work order it says PERFORMED PROGRAMMING AND REPLACED REAR MUFFLER

Unfortunately when i picked up the car my SA was off already so i didn't get a chance to ask about it.

Is performing programming same as software update? I think it's updated because the gears shift weird now it's like alot rougher from first to 2nd and to 3rd. Also all my settings such as how many times it blinks for lane changing and radio and even mirror settings are reset.

There's talk on the tuning forum of the newest software also having the ability to store tuner codes, even if you clear them... so read those threads before upgrading. One more thing to consider if you're tuned in holding off for now...
