Clear Coat peeling

Hey guys
My clear coat is peeling, i guess from the harsh winter. Dealership said warranty doesnt cover that. How much would a body shop charge me? also, is this a possible DIY? the last 2 pics are just close ups

Did you buy the car new? I'm guessing the bumper was repainted (poorly) at one point. Not much you can do DIY, and a full repaint will probably be a few hundred bucks.

If you're in warranty and the bumper was never repainted, it's unacceptable for BMW to not be covering that.

I still think you have a case. Any repairs done to a CPO car are supposed to be done to BMW spec. A paint job peeling in 5 months is certainly not BMW spec. It's not a huge repair compared to many other things, but it would suck to have to pay for this out of pocket. It might be worth your time to argue this one a bit.

The invoice paper that they gave me says "Customer states the clear coat behind the rear wheels is coming off." Responded with "bio found impact causing clear to peel, not warrantable" The SA also said its from rocks and things like that, so warranty doesnt cover it. So could i fight it? or am i screwed?

How would it look like if i did vinyl? lol. I want to put vinyl over my amber headlights. anyone have a template for that?

Very strange. Did you get a copy of the car fax when you bought it to see if it had been damaged before? I would assume not because I thought they won't CPO a car if it's been in an accident. I can't imagine the factory clear doing that. Even if the car wasn't taken care of, i.e. regularly washed, waxed, etc, it shouldn't be anywhere near old enough for clear coat failure. If that's the factory clear, and the car is still under the original warranty, I think it should be covered.

Not siding with BMW/ your dealer on this one but if BMW were to cover paint defects then just about anyone could ask their dealer to respray their car. For example, and I hope this never happens because I just finished clay, polish and waxing my car like an hour ago, the dealer washes your car after service and they put some nice swirls in it after washing it. I would be like f that. Respray my car lol.

The dealer installed swirl option drives me nuts. I took my wife's Volvo in for service recently, and the car was already dirty. They gave it a courtesy wash, which I did not ask for, and somehow the car was actually dirtier after their courtesy wash than before. Had to be the worst wash job I've ever seen.

If possible, you might check with another dealer. Otherwise, I would contact BMWNA if the dealer won't help you. If there's no explanation that you know of that could have caused that, it should be covered.

BTW unless you plan on wrapping your whole car...you won't find a match for alpine white. But if you happen to find it, doubt it, let me know because I would rather just wrap my bumpers/side skirts than wrap my whole car. I plan on getting an M3 front/side skirts and m-tech rear with a quad setup this summer. Matte white vinyling my whole car....myself. I'm in college and don't have that much to spend so vinyl is a cheap alternative to paint. My roof came out ok so I think I can tackle my whole car.

That should absolutely be covered under warranty if there has been no respraying of the car since you took ownership. I would speak with the head SA and if you get nowhere contact BMWNA. Go to www.bmwusa.com to find their contact info.

However you may get turned down and here is why...

Just because a car is CPO does not mean that it has not been in an accident. Also the owner may have had the bumper resprayed out of pocket (lots of rock chips, ran into a parking pole, backed into) and it would never show up on a carfax. So i would try to go though BMW. But you may not get anywhere.

I am almost positive it was resprayed. My gf recently purchased a CPO Z4 and the front bumper/side skirts/rear bumper were all resprayed. I took it to someone because I had a hunch and they were able to tell. I was told that it is normal practice for dealerships to get cars from auctions and then have the bumpers resprayed to make them look new. None of it is reported to CarFax and dealerships do not inform buyers of this.

looking at those pictures i see two spots that look like something chipped the clear coat. It won't take much to cause that to happen.

Take it to a body shop and have them give you an estimate as well as an opinion as to what they think caused it, if they side with you and say its a defect in the clear coat then you might have a case.

if they say its a rock chip or that it has been repainted you're pretty much SOL.
