Am I being unreasonable?

Thoughts please.

A young p-plater gave my rear bumper a little tickle-up in a shopping center car park a few weeks ago. I got a quote from a BMW approved repairer in Alexandria for $1800, or $1200 cash if it does not go through insurance. I have a second quote from another BMW approved repairer which is pretty similar.

So this kids grandfather came to look at the car today and wants me to take it to a Holden panel beater in Nth Ryde as the young kid's excess is $2200 and they are looking for a minimum spend & they know these people.

Am I being a wanker for insisting on using my preferred repairer, or should I be reasonable and at least get a quote from the other mob? Nth Ryde isn't really convenient for me + I have some damage from a truck revering into the front of my car that is going to be fixed through my insurance at the same time.

My thoughts at the moment is to tell them it's the approved repairer whom they can pay direct, or I'll simply file an insurance claim and let them deal with it on my behalf.

Cheers,

S

That one. Not your fault that your rear bumper was damaged. How do you know that the Holden repairer can repair the damage to proper BMW repair spec? You don't. Are you willing to take the risk? Your thoughts are the right ones in my opinion and I would do exactly the same.

Best wishes.

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all.

Sh*t happens and he should be greatful you're prepared to let him settle the $1200 bill instead of paying his $2200 excess and affect his NCB.

Absolutely 100% not unreasonable. Use the BMW panel shop that you are happy with.

FWIW I've had this happen twice when my car was parked outside my workplace. On the first occasion the perpetrator found me and told me - he was on P's and the repair quote was $1200. My excess would have been $500 so I contributed that and he paid the rest. The job was astonishingly good. Regatta at Five Dock.

The second occasion I chose to use a BMW repairer, recommended by several people, not in Earlwood or Alexandria but not so far from there. We went through insurance. The work - effectively a bumper repaint - was appalling and I had to have it done again. They were very apologetic (although not to the point of providing me with a loan car) and the subsequent job was acceptable, if not to the same standard as Regatta.

I still wish I had used Regatta, but was of the mistaken opinion that a BMW approved repairer would be superior.

My point is not that you should avoid BMW approved repairers, rather that if you know someone that does good work, use them even if it costs you a little extra.

Either the kid is going to pay you $1200 cash to repair or go through the claim channel and go for the one in Alexandria (Panel One?? they are very good).

Defininately go to your preferred repairer. It is not worth risking the quality of the job to save someone else's money. Depending how honest and straight-forward the kid has been, I'd consider going straight to the insurance company.

Panel one is good. i went there and all BMW was there for repair. I trust them!!!

LOL bmw car take it to Holden repairer? it is not fair i think.

bmw must go to bmw approved repairer. holden go to holden approved repairer. simple as that. If I drive honda or toyota, i wouldnt mind go to holden workshop, but this is BMW!

That's cheap.. do you know if the bumper is getting repaired or replaced?

I'm in a similar situation at the moment (front bumper), and the quote from a shop in Alexendria is about 2k.

I think your being more than reasonable. Most people would just lodge a claim with their own insurance and tell the guy to get fu#$ed. Your best off doing a cash job for the small amount of damage.

I've said this a thousand times and will continue to say it... Even if you make a "not at fault" claim it can still effect your insurance premium on renewal.

If you shop around for insurance you will notice a lot of "low risk" insurance companies now days will ask if you have had a claim regardless of who was at fault. They basically couldn't care less if someone hit your parked car of if you wrote off 6 cars and you were at fault, as far as their concerned a claim is a claim and either scenario will effect your quote the same way.

perfectly reasonable.

Dont forget, you are still being inconvenienced.

Also, the person needs to learn a lesson and be more careful. We all learn from our mistakes when we realise it

Yeah I did not think I was being unreasonable.

I got a second BMW authorized repairer to quote on Friday arvo and will go with Panel one regardless.

The car is having some other work done (from a truck that reversed into the front bumper) at the same time so I'll just tell the kid to sod off and claim through my insurer if they don't want to pay the cash amount, which would be silly on their part given the cost of repair is less than their excess.

Damage to the rear bar is very slight, so it's basically remove, sand, prime and re-install. If it was my wife's car she would say 'there is no damage' so it's certainly nothing major, I'm just AR about my car.
