What's the difference between E90/E92 323i and 325i?
Dumb question, but why do BMW make it so confusing...
Both 323 and 325's seem to have 2.5L engines. I've noticed the E90 323's seem to stop in 2006 then switched to 325i now is it back to the 323i name again? And the E92 is available in both 323i and 325i?? A friend is looking at one so I need some clarification. Last edited by MFKN3; 05-17-2010 at 02:10 AM.. |

It is confusing. Looking back at some old price lists, the 325i was available from E90 launch in 2005 and the 323i was re-introduced a little later from Feb 2006. AFAIK both models are still available.
Both 323i and 325i were available from E92 Launch in 2006. I believe the 323i will no longer be available with the E92 LCI (it has disappeared from the Configurator), but 320d and 330d models have been added. You can probably still get 323s as runout stock. Both models are based on the same 2.5L engine but the 323i is detuned as follows: 323i - 140kW / 230Nm 325i - 160kW / 250Nm |

Thanks for the thorough response.
Sounds almost like a BMW marketing stuff up!! Interestingly, I read the 325i can be upgraded to a 330i (3 litre) just by swapping a few engine parts. Not sure it it's worth the cost however |

I think you're referring to the detuned 3.0L engine they use for European 325i's. That engine is not available on Oz 3er cars (but is available on the 1er)

Going from 325i to 323i, the difference isn't huge, feeling a bit like you've picked up a couple of passengers. You still get I6 smoothness and sound from the 323i.
