Some quick opinions please

I am going to get my rear diffuser painted black very soon, but i was wondering whether to paint the small insert in the middle in the TiAg body colour. My thoughts are that it would break up the other wise quite bland looking plastic slab, as once it gets painted black it would look even more bland.

That little highlighted piece.

Also, I am considering whether to get the lower mesh of the front (M sport) bumper painted a darker black to match with my black rims and black performance grills. Currently it is more of a greyish-black which doesn't match with the grills or rims. Getting the front done is quite a bit of work and I am not sure whether the cost will be worth it. I can live with the current look, but that is only because I know that painting it will be a substantial job.

..Without the black grills, but just to give an idea about what it looks like -

EDIT - New pics with grills lower down

Thanks in advance!

Hi SBC, The center part of the diffuser is supposed to give the impression of being a vent. IMHO, it might look a bit strange to paint it silver. I don't really have an opinion about the other issue you mentioned. If I may ask, what is taking so long getting the new grill fitted?

I think painting the small insert silver would give the diffuser a more contoured, and therefore a better look. I'm sure some of the US guys have done this before so there may be some pics on the US forum.

I would leave the front mesh as is.

a vent..? after you mention it i definitely see what you mean... but it is not a particularly good attempt at making something look like a vent. The grills are on the car but I just haven't had a good opportunity to take some pictures. Seeing all the other pictures on here I feel almost ashamed to put up pics of a dirty car.

Last week I found a post by someone who had painted the insert body colour on their e92 but I cant find it anymore... It definitely gave it a bit more shape but some of the pics weren't too convincing. My main gripe is that I have never really like the grey plasticky bit as its a bit boring and plain looking. I think the insert in silver could make it liven it up a bit or make my rear "different" to all the others at the very least.

yes, maybe so. Diffusers are normally supposed to have vents in them so that is why I think that. Perhaps the designers couldn't really decide if they wanted it to look like a vent or not.
I don't know if you have seen the 'BMW performance' rear diffuser, but that also has some not particularly convicing psuedo-vent areas.

Well fair enough. Maybe you could update the thread with pic when you get a chance to wash it..

I would think painting the front grill to match the wheels is good sense, and also the rear diffuser to tie it all in.

Personally I think painting that little section at the rear silver would look daft.

And t henyou really should paint the bodywork orange. Silver is so meh.

@John_01 - i thought about the performance rear but it seems far too over the top

@johnnydad - thats the kind opinion i want. like i said, i saw some pics a few days ago of an e92 but wasn't totally convinced. It looked alright from some angles, but looking at it dead rear on it looked a bit odd. as for painting orange.. its a bit further down the track. I have been inspired by some of these cars ..

I had my diffuser painted body colour and left the insert black.

Sorry for the poor quality pic, only one I could find that was handy.

ooo the reverse of what im thinking. actually not bad with the insert left black. do you have any shots from further out? also keep in mind that my car only has single side exhaust so the diffuser doesnt have as much detail as yours and two exhaust tips to break it up.

Looks overly fussy to me, and the fit and relationship of the u-shaped section is poor.

WOPALX - that works unexpectedly well, but still don't think the opposite would apply.

SBC - thanks, enjoyed the link. I'm inspired

Its my company name as an acronym.

The bolle tint is yellowish so it does make the leather look greenish from the outside depending on the light.

I did find out about the performance diffuser but fitment in the standard Msport is not that great. Bits have to be shaved and chopped etc.. it would be much simpler painting the current rear. I wouldn't get c/f look anyway as there is nothing else c/f on the car and it wouldn't suit well with the rims and black front. Plus, like johnnydad says, i too ended up finding it a bit too detailed... and if i get the regular primed version and paint it black then i would end up losing the detail anyway...= money wasted. Regular Msport is too plain, and Performance style is too much! Maybe I'm just being too fussy.

Love the grill. It looks great on your car!

I am not a fan of the performance diffuser either. I think it looks a bit too busy with all the fake vents.

Do you have one of those cameras with a wide lens? They tend to exaggerate the perspective a bit, so it might help to stand back another couple of metres and zoom in slightly.

I am not really a camera person, i just have a decent digital one. Nothing too fancy, but I'll try standing back next time and see if it is better.

Performance rear is out of the question for sure now and I think I'll just go with all black diffuser. I'm also leaning towards getting the front done just so I won't have any regrets.

also.. a bit off topic.. but do 3 series owners ever meet up? Over on 1 Addicts they seem to get together quite often..

If you are going to go for the Performance insert the best way to go is to leave it unpainted.........it looks alot better, imho.
