Question E92 M3 manual - a bit clonky?

Hi

test drove an M3 today with 13k miles and it sounds very mechanical when slotting into gears 1 and 2. Is this normal?

Compared to my 330 (E46), it took me a while to perform a really smooth gearchange from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd.

Does the diff make noise with steering on full lock?

What sort of noises / feel should there be pls?
Cheers

I found the manual M3 notchy when I drove a couple, one I drove was in December and it was really very mechanical to get gears, when the box was cold.

The brakes are louder than my 335i when pressed hard.

A gearbox is still not really loosened up after only 13k miles, the M3 boxes and transmission mounts etc are very tight and slack free to give a direct feel, this will show up hesitant gearchanges if they aren't spot on. You'd find i'm sure that you would 're-calibrate' your timing to the new shift method very quickly.

The diff should make no sound whatsoever when in any type of turn.

Didn't like the manual at all in the M3... why bother when you can have the DCT which will do it better than you can anyway ()

M3 manual is notchy, as Doughboy said you adapt very quickly, and the diff will give a noticeable mechanical sound. I prefer manual over DCT, better suited to my driving style.

Without actually hearing it in person, it's hard to say. If worried get a third party to give it the once over. I am guessing it's a couple of years old and at 13k it should be absolutely fine mate.

Yep, one of the things that put me off the M3. All 3 I've driven were the same.

Am not ready for dual clutch systems yet but tbh these high revving V8's the manufacturers are kicking out nowadays (new RS5 also) are probably better suited to a dual clutch system unless you like changing gear a lot.

Oh I don't know it's probably psychological in all honesty.

I've driven a Carrera S with PDK and it was a great gearbox and I know the DCT is also............just there's something about changing down manually and setting up the car yourself for a corner. It's a mental block thing.

Like Kevin says........it's having that constantly hard stick to hand all the time.

I'm old don't forget.

You still change down manually in a DCT based car? The bonus is if you want to change gear mid corner (up or down) the car becomes less unsettles as the gearchanges are faster and the car doesn't really spend any time without drive like it would if you had dipped the clutch pedal.

As I posted on the M3 forum, these new E9x M3's are very mechanical cars and unless the clonky noises really sound like a fault, they are prob the same as our cars. Have you only driven the one and had no others to compare it to?

+1 on the DCT box. I was a proper 'auto hater' before I had this DCT based M3 and now I would never go back. It really is that good IMO. It completes the 'feel' of the M3 and adds to the enjoyment of the drive. It is involving and precise when you want it to be, pressing on through the twisties with the M button depressed and the box set to S6 - It can also be a lazy auto if your stuck in traffic. Pop it into D1 and let it pull away smoothly in second

I've got my name down for a test drive in the RS5 when it comes out and that of course is dual clutch set up. I'll go with an open mind.

In the mean time I could of course have a play in a M3 with DCT no doubt.

Yea pretty notchy... you get used to it though, and after a while you can really control the car with the throttle to make the ride smooth, you just have to know what your doing...

Every one of my cars has been manual - even when i was advised by BMW that getting a manual 335i would be much worse for resale......i got it anyway. I have ordered the DCT though for my new car - even though i have only tried it for a very short period. Hope i don't regret it but i have read and heard amazing things about the DCT so i'm taking a leap of faith on it.

I think you're going to love your new M3 Steve. Like you I tend to prefer a manual gearbox but looking at things dispassionately, both the M3 and RS5 are high revving N/A V8's. Technology has now given us these new dual clutch systems and in all honesty I think those gearboxes suit these engines.

Plus, you're moving to a car with correct suspension (camber etc) set up so no dangerous inside tyre wear (gets my back up that really does), N/A so no probs. associated with some 35i engines, and no nasty runflats..........
