WHY is cold startup jerky
I know this topic has been discussed. Apparently, the new ECU flash reduces or eliminates this problem. Either I don't have the new flash or there is something else wrong.
NOW here is my question... WHY would the car be jerky at all? Ever? In my short 31 years I have had many cars ranging from an 84 Cutless to an 07 335i, none of them except for the 335i have ever had this kind of embaressing problem at startup and for the following 5 minutes. Does anyone know what the mechanical reason is for this well known problem? Engine warmup? Turbo warmup? Am I being too demanding or should a 40K or 50K run smoothly all the time? Three days after I got the car I brought it into the dealer and they said there was no problem and that I was just feeling the "adaptive transmission" adapt. Then, I did some research and it appears that was a lame excuse. I love everything about my new 335i except for the first 5 minutes of every morning. That pisses me off. |

You love the brake dust Anyway, take it to the dealer and have the flash done. Your air-fuel mixture is not correct for the warm up period. |

According to the TSB it affects cars build prior to Sept 15.
Mine doesn;t do it if I put it in DS mode while cold. It probably has to do with the direct injection. Making an appointment today to have mine reflashed next week.

I'll have to try that DS mode trick... my car actually fully cut out during accelleration yesterday, and it was not the traction control... it was like 20 degrees out, cold start... I have an appointment on the 18th, also getting a free after break-in oil change... once its warm, everything is dandy.

Here in SLC, I live at the base of the mountains at about 5000 feet. It's routinely 15 degrees outside when I first start her up. I've also have noticed that my car simply starts and runs quite poorly when cold. I have started letting her warm up for about 15 minutes in the morning before I even take off. And then I don't drive faster than about 45mph for the first five miles in the morning. I think any car would have this problem when cold, and It makes sense it would be more pronouced when a car is new and everything is still so tight. Maybe it has something to do with the metal used on the turbo's? Maybe since it can handle such high temps it is challenged when facing such low temps? Just throwing that out there.....

Socalm3,
Under 2000 miles sdiver68, Brake dust does not bother me. It seems every car I have ever owned had more brake dust than anyone else. I have become an expert at cleaning wheels quickly. |
