Outside light error
Is there a way to read a code without Idrive? Getting double "outside light" error on the dash.
Thanks Art Last edited by theART; 05-23-2010 at 12:05 AM.. |

looks like Sun with rays pointing down. Walked around the car and couldn't notice any lights out.
Anyone got a pic of what the back lights look like with illumination on? I think it might be the rears, because only LED strips are on. Art |

Turn your lights to the on position, turn on your fogs, turn on your hazard flashers, have someone sit in your car, step on the brake, and put it in reverse. All the exterior lights should be on at that point so you can go around and see if any are out.

Those are the adaptive brake/rear fog lamps. If you don't have the rear fog button, you can have someone behind the car as you drive, then slam on the brakes hard and see if they light up along with the normal brake lights. Or just pull the bulbs out and see if they're burned out.
They shouldn't be burned out since they rarely get used anyways, but it's possible.

I don't think I have rear fog button, and when pressing brake those don't light up, OMG, I am gonna remove these and check em out.
unless there are some hidden lights, those are the only once I could find that don't light up! Why is such a simple thing as locating a burned bulb has to be so difficult on BMW ![]() Is it possible this light error is phantom? like good bulb would somehow cause improper resistance and throw the error? |

Those only light up under very hard braking.
But yes, it's also possible its a 'phantom' error.

I had this issue, had some hardware in the rear taillight clusters replaced under warranty. Service adviser mentioned this being a known issue, that the original part could become slightly loose, causing a change in voltage, thus confusing the car into thinking one of the lights was bad. I did the same walk-around, with the help of a friend, did every light check combination, and each light was fine. After the new part, all is well. Could be a longshot, but see if your local dealership has heard of this.

check license plate lights. if you can't find lights it's usually those. i'd find it odd that it'd be your rear fogs, since they rarely turn on unless you have the rear fog switch and you toggle it often.

I had some warranty work done in my random exterior light issue, a loose board in the taillights, or something to that effect. Three weeks later, I got another warning on the dash. Only happened once, haven't seen it since. Seems like it's still not completely fixed.
