I think this is a fair deal, dealer doesn't. Thoughts?
My car (trying to trade in):
2006 330i Sparkling Graphite/Dakota Black 40,200 miles Auto iDrive Sport Premium Brand new tires Body is in great shape Asking for them to give me $23,000 (I know, very high for a trade in, but...like Billy Mays...wait, there's more). Their car: 2011 328i Jet black/black 6mt Sport Premium Heated seats/steering wheel Xenons iDrive Satellite Sticker: $42,765. -- I've offered them full sticker price + $1,000 if they give me $23,000 for my trade. Am I crazy or does that seem like a reasonable deal? If not - tell me so at least I know I'm being unreasonable. |

Hmmm, what would be your reasoning to pay more for the new car if you get more for your old? Do you think its less appealing if they sold you the new car for $40 even and gave you $20k for the car? I just want to know the reasoning for paying over sticker to get what you want for your trade in, but thats just me.

Well basically for the ease of the transaction - instead of having to sell mine private party. Obviously the dealer isn't going to make any money if they give me 23k on the trade (they might sell it for 23, but there are other costs associated with getting it sold).
What it really comes down to is this: If they offer me 20 for my car and, let's say 39 for their car - I'm basically out 3k for the pay off. I'd rather have that 3k rolled up in my payment then taking it out of my savings. Does that make sense? Of course my other option is to be patient, order one the way I want it from Irv or whomever, and then just sell my car private party. I'm trying to avoid all that trouble and the waiting though... |

All that matters is the difference between price for the new one and the trade. Just come up with a $ amount that you are comfortable with. Realistically look at what you should be able to get the new one for less the wholesale price for yours.

The price you finance won't matter, its just on your math. These are you basic scenarios: $43,765 - $23,000 = $20,765 in financing or $40,000 - $20,000 = $20,00 financing, you'll have the same payments virtually, its all on paper. Now if you can get the car for $40,000 and get $23,000 for the car then you're sitting pretty.

No car saleman myself so I agree with other as far as the delta is what dealer is looking for.
For you it'll be the same, delta is what matters but it may have slight repercussion to you if: 1) the state you live in charge sales tax on full new car price (regardless trade-in). Lowering the new car sales matter here. 2) some states including WA at the time being only charge sales tax on the delta if purchase made through dealers(i.e $43k on new car, $23k on trade-in buyer only pay sales tax on the $20K not the entire $43k like point 1) above. It matters if sales tax is close to 10% or so. |

But I figured the 328i with MT would be a fun car and hold me over until the F30. |

Perhaps I'll just buy an extended warranty and hold on to my 330 for a couple years. |

I am a Client Advisor. What are you trying to achieve? Monthly payment? Trade-in value?

Thanks trackfiend. I'm trying to achieve the best trade in value so I can minimize my out of pocket to cover the loan. Financing is all ready to go, so that's not an issue, but I just want to get as close to my payoff as possible.
