Mixed synthetic oil with conventional oil! Need help!
i have my annual oil change scheduled for 3 weeks from now but for the past few days, i've been getting warnings from my car saying my oil level is low and i need to add a quart. so i decided to play it say and add a quart to prevent any damage but i accidently added a quart of castrol gtx convention oil (it was the only thing i could get). my question is, is this a really big deal? is it dangerous? is there anything i should do even though i have an oil change scheduled in 3 weeks. i'm not really sure what the reaction between mixing synethic and conventional might be. thans for the advice

If it's leased, no worries. If it's owned, probably no worries but if you really want to be an** about it, get the oil changed, and change it again in another 1200-5000.

one quart diluted should be no issues, especially since we're coming up on Summer, as I understand conventional oil needs a bit more warm up time than synthetic in cold temps to reach the proper viscosity.

glad to hear. that puts me at ease. i figured a quart low for 3 weeks would be okay but i do a lot of stop and go traffic over the George Washington Bridge everyday so i wanted to safe. then i thought i might have done more damage by mixing. thanks for the advice.

Mixing synthetic with petroleum is no problem
It's not a problem to mix synthetic and non-synthetic. For one thing, there are several oil choices out there now that are "para-synthetic" or "partially synthetic" which is basically petro mixed with synthetic to lower the cost.
In the old days, before there were engine flush products, we used to dump a quart of Amsoil in a car and run it for an oil change to clean out sludge prior to doing a complete change to synthetic. It never caused any problems. I've also been caught out on the road and had to add some petroleum oil to my Harleys as well, and it's never caused an issue. Hope this helps, JL |

I have the exact same problem. It is good to see this thread.
I decided to play it safe like OP and add a qt of non-synthetic 5W-30 before driving to the dealer just to make sure there is no oil line failure because I see puddle of oil underneath the car in the morning. I just had oil change 2 weeks ago and I was thinking about the crush washer and the SA told me that's exactly the case. He said that the crush washer failed (but it could be that the technician did not tighten the drain plug properly and blame the washer too). |
