Anyone know what this is about?

Hey just got this email from the lady dealer chick...

Just wanted to let you know that production for your 335i Coupe has moved to February instead of January. They are having technical problems at the factory for the 335i Coupes which hopefully will be resolved quickly.

As soon as I receive a specified week in February, I will inform you asap

This blows! Anyone know what these technical problems may be?

Still too much HP and torque, they have to develop another reflash to bring it down a little more?

J/K, I have no idea but will be interested to hear what it is.

I wonder when the delay goes into effect. (My car is scheduled for build the week of December 18, 2006.)

Your sales lady is feeding it to you. I have not heard of any technical problems at the factory that is delaying the 335i coupe. What I do know is that the 335i coupes are very low production. I have a client that ordered in late October and his car isn't being built until the first week in January.

The fact that your is car being pushed back might be true, but there have been no factory techincal problems, just problems getting all the list or ordered cars built.

Interesting, I was also told this...

"The factory in Munich will be closed from December 17 through January 15, therefore no cars will be built during this time. But you should have a build in the second half of January."

So are you saying this is all a bunch of BS or are they built in more than one place?

No, that is the truth that the factory closes down. But there are no technical issues delaying 335i coupes at the factory.

...trying to figure out how to reconcile a factory holiday beginning 12/17 with a confirmed (by BMWUSA) build date the week of 12/18.

Anybody have any thoughts? I'm pretty sure they build Threes in at least two factories -- do they build coupes in one and sedans in the other? Are both sites idled?

Coupes are only built in Germany. Sedans are built in both Germany and South Africa.

The fact that your car has a build date the week of 12/18 baffles me too. They will probably push it back to the first week in January.

BTW: Your 335i coupe is replacing your GTI eh? I just bought a 2006 MKV GTI right before I started selling bimmers. A 2008 335i coupe will be replacing mine as well

I think there's two plants in Germany that produce Threes -- Regensburg and Munich. (At least, I remember seeing that when I was toying with a Euro Delivery and wanted to see the car's birthplace.)

Maybe the factory shutdown is why they won't confirm a 1/26/07 delivery date at the Performance Center in SC for me? I'm trying for February 2. OTOH, Owner's Circle email did confirm the car's configuration and 12/18 build date.

Me no understand.

I never did drive the '07 GTI...but I've had 2 GTIs ('00 -- 12-valve VR6, '03 -- 24-valve VR6) as "second cars" alongside the '02 M5 and the '00 540i/6 that preceded it. I can get out of a V8 BMW, get into the VW, and enjoy the hell out of the drive. That says a lot about a $20k car, I think. I convinced one of my sisters to get a Jetta for her kids to learn to drive, and driving my GTI got my other sister into a Passat. They're nice cars.

I had a 2002 24-valve VR6 GTI, and now I have my 2006 2.0T. I love my VW's, but it's getting really hard selling these cars and not driving one myself. I love them that much.

Cheers

Sounds like they sold your car/allocation to someone else right from under you. Someone probably plucked down MSRP or over and your dealer didn't have anymore Jan. slots open. Do you have Prod # yet? You should have received a Prod # for a Jan built at end of Nov or earlier this month.

Speculation

My car (335i Coupe) was ordered exactly two weeks ago. I received a production number and have been calling the 800 number every day:rocks: . Up until yesterday the status had been "on order with no specified production date". However yesterday the status was updated that the car would go into production and be built this week.

So, I too am confused by these delay and factory shut down stirrings?

I am speculating here but maybe the different build times has to do with the order allocation slots that the dealer is able to obtain. For example a particular dealer may have 3 build slots for December and 5 for January. The build slot the dealer assigns to our order may be at their descretion. So, for various reason they may assign customers an earlier or later slot regardless of when the order was placed.

One scenario might be that all of the dealers December slots became filled up. Customer A orders his car on December 15th and is assigned a January build slot. Then Customer B comes along and purchases a car on December 20th. Due to a recent cancelation, one of the December slots has become vacant. Rather than switch all the orders around, the dealer just modifies the recently vacated December slot for Customer B's new order. Consequently even though Customer B purchased after Customer A, he lucked out and got an earlier build slot.

Again, I don't know if this is how it actually works but could be one possibility. If anyone has any insider info on how the dealer allocation slots work, please let us know.

Thanks!

No I never got a prod# just an order#. I ordered in Nov and put my deposit down but was told I wouldn't get a VIN until about a week or so before my car went into production. Should I have received one at the time of my order?

I don't think, like it was mentioned above, that my slot got sold to someone else as I went through military sales and I think we all pay the same no matter what. I have no idea just a little bummed since I had planned it perfectly to get my car the week I got home from Iraq, now it's looking like I may have to rent a car for about a month since I already sold my other car.

Try and contact either the BMW regional office,Corporate in Woodcliff Lake,NJ or the Sales Manager at a few different dealerships to find out exactly. The plant only closes for 2 weeks, the cars are scarce but a dealer can sometimes trade to get an earlier production slot, the 328 sedans only are made in South Africa and you get the production number when the dealer specs out the car.send me a pm anytime.....

According to my sales guy, my car (E92) is a week 51 production slot. That would be next week (week of 12/18/2006).

I just got off the phone with BMW NA. I gave the automated system my production number, and the status came back as "IN PRODUCTION" with a targeted completion date of 12/22 (Friday of the production week).

I spoke with a real person who confirmed everything, and said that she was not aware of any planned shutdowns at the factory. (Certainly she wouldn't be the first to know, but I would think that a scheduled shutdown would be disclosed.)

I also got my VIN, so that seemed to me a good indicator that they're making progress.
