Quick question about my exhaust smoking?
I am pretty sure that one of my turbos needs to be replaced.. As my car is warming up, I almost always have white/bluish smoke coming from the passenger side exhaust tip.
So my question is, would that be the front or rear turbo that is bad? Last edited by Malaka1; 06-24-2010 at 01:50 PM.. |

White smoke during warm up is normal (water condensation), and the driver side pipe is closed so it will smoke from the passenger side only during warm up. If there is a blown turbo it would blue-smoke most when the engine is fully warm and during WOT, hard accelerations.

I dont think it is water condensation it has a blue tint to the smoke and smells like oil.. It will smoke for a while too, unless I turn off the car it will just pour clouds of smoke all the way down the street. I have a fully divorced downpipe back exhaust so neither side is closed during startup, looking at some diagrams though makes me think if it is smoking from the passenger side exhuast than that is the rear turbo..?

Could be, that would be much easier to replace. Also a video would be helpful

So does anyone know which turbo would need to be replaced, the front or rear? It is only smoking from the passenger side exhaust I have catless dp's and a fully divorced exhaust so however they meet up after the downpipes..

If I were in your shoes I think I would take them both off and have them rebuilt. I don't see any reason to do just one. The car will be down for the same amount of time. I would bet the reason it doesn't smoke when fully warmed up is the metal expands and the seals work ok and when cold the metal shrinks and the seals can no longer seal.
