I posted this in the tech forums also, but haven't heard anything yet.

We know that BMW likes to underestimate their performance numbers. Like the previous N54 engine 335i 0 to 60 was really around 4.8 instead of the manufacturer quoted 5.3.
Now for the new 2011 the quoted 0 to 60 time is yet again 5.3 for manual coupe.
Does anyone know the "real" 0 to 60 time of the new 2011 335i?
I realize it may not be as fast as the twin-turbo N54 engine, but is it really 5.3 or is it faster?
Has anyone test driven theirs?

I haven't seen any conclusive results, but things like atmospheric conditions can sometimes make a 10th or two's worth of difference one way or the other. That, and getting the drivetrain "broken in", so to speak, plus whether you're running 91 or 93 octane.

well ya, but were talking simple baseline to baseline ... 91 oct is the usual and as long as your not in denver, well accept it

I guess what would make it difficult for "normal" people to do these tests at this time is that the car was just released and many people probably haven't gotten their babys out of the break-in phase.
I am kind of surprised I haven't seen anything form official sources.
Everyone magazine just says "manufacturer quotes times of 5.3..."

Stop quoting and take the damn car for a test drive already. Isnt anyone interested in the new engine performancee

Bugatti Veyron is 2.4 I believe... and since 335i > Veyron.... by the transitive property.... 335i 0 - 60 < 2.4 sec

That would be amazing , but I can't imagine that the single turbo (even if twin-scroll) would be as fast from 0 to 60 as a twin turbo.

I'd be more concerned about dyno numbers or trap speed. With cars these days getting faster and faster, 0-60 is more indicative of traction than horsepower.

Why not? They showed totally identical numbers on actual dyno (there was a thread here about it), so why not similar 0-60 on practically the same car with just different engine?

I believe I read somewhere on the mysterious internet that it was more like 5.1... but, I read that awhile ago and that was most likely an estimate and not a test.

N55 feels faster to me on my butt dyno, feels more torque too as the RPM gallops higher and higher. This thing is a beast! Coming from a 335i N54 driver for two years. No wonder this thing is aka Veyron killah.

Yeah, I've read that there is less lag with this engine. Great to hear that it even feels faster.

The reason I believe that it would be slower than the N54 engine is that it loses a turbo and it increases mpg (fuel economy) by like 2 mpgs (i think). Usually when that happens that means a decrease in performance somehow.

Again this is just my guess and I would be VERY happy to know if the 2011 335i has the same 0 to 60 as the 2010.

Real street driven test data would be nice.

I have read in another thread that the boost in N55 is higher than N54, which explains the better performance and fuel economy. That said, the N55 has lesser tuning potential than N54 as the turbo capacity is pretty much maxed out.

Eric: BMW Performance will be making a power kit for the N55 that will bring power levels up to the same levels of the existing N54 power kit. Overboost is undecided at this time. Keep in mind that N54 will slowly be phased out in favor of the N55 due to efficiency and other factors, so the N55 will be targeted moving forward.

So who's your source that the N55 is maxed out?

Same power to the pavement, no torque change. Why not? I don't think the times will change between the two engines, but expect a sub 5 second time (realistically).

This is why I actually started the thread. I read that article and it got me thinking of what real numbers would look like.

Link? BMW times are never accurate, there always way high.
