Missing Rear Undercarriage Panel Trim?

While looking at the BMW Performance Exhaust topic, I noticed that the car pictured has what looks like missing undercarriage panel, the opening to the right of the muffler in front of the bumper. Is this a vent? With all the trouble that BMW has put into panels under the car, why not here?
