Blow Off Vavle Question.
This is not a noob question about if I can put a bov on my auto or anything like that. I'm basically interested in the vacuum connection to the bov. Is it really necessary to connect it? I'm guessing it will throw a code if it isn't connected. And will the bov continue to function if the vacuum line connected?
Thank you for your time explaining this to me.

I'm not. Just curious on what the function of it is. And how can you tell if it is working correctly without installing it. Since I'm thinking about buying a different bov locally. It would be great if I could tell that it is in working condition without installing it.

Basically its just a push pull diaphragm with a preloaded fix spring(some are adjustable). If you just apply the vac to the nipple and rev the car you should see the valve open and shut. Far as in if its working properly (holding booost/seal) youll need a boost gauge and verify if you have a boost leak.

Hook one of those hand held vacuum pumps up to it to be sure the diaphragm opens. I don't think you would have a boost leak if the vacuum hose is not hooked up because it provides a vacuum to pull the BOV open releasing boost pressure. If you didn't hook it up the valve simply would not open. Also if your car is there when you go to buy the BOV you could just unhook the vacuum hose from one of your valves on the car and hook it to the one you intend to buy with the car running at idle it will provide a vacuum and hold the valve slightly open. This is only the case at idle so you could rev the engine up and watch the valve close and then open when it returns to idle.
