Recommended Tire Pressure for HK's Roads

Dear All,

Just wondering what sort of tire pressure you guys are running on HK's pot-hole filled roads?

I currently have a staggered setup of 17" 255 in the rear and 225 in the front. What sort of pressures will you recommend to achieve a balance of handling, fuel economy and comfort?

But shouldn't tire pressure be checked under 'cold' condition?

but should the rear tires be of a higher pressure than the front tires on a staggered setup? or is that not necessary?

When I picked up my car from BMW, I think it was 28psi or 30 for the front 32 for the rear. I just pumped up the front to 32 as well, it feels quite a bit bumpier and feels the road more through the steer wheel.

Beware that extra pressure will reduce the tire's contact patch. Reducing the size of patch means decreased ride quality and may negatively impact the car's handling. Stick to the BMW's recommended tire pressure in most cases, unless if it's really hot like right now. I suppose a little extra air will not do too much harm, espeically in this heat. I was driving in NT yesterday and temp gauge reads 36 degrees celisus. I had a tire pressure warning sign on, the next morning add in some air and the car runs fine.

it is not due to staggered setup but the loading distribution (motion and idle) of the car in general.

Thanks little croco.

So what sort of pressures will you all recommend? And if I already have 17" 225s on my rear tires and 225s in my front tires, do I still need to have my rear tires at a higher pressure? I was under the impression that the differential pressures in the front and the back are for prevention of oversteer?

Maybe someone can help me clarify.

Thanks!

Not sure about others but I normally will do my rear around 2-3 PSI higher than the front!! As such, the back of the car feels like a big lighter which having the tendancy to swing a bit faster when driving fast in a tough turns....I like the rear to swing a bit during turns...indeed personal perference though!! Just pump a big higher these few days with my 19" set up pumped 33 PSI front and 36 PSI rear!! However, don't ever trusted the gas station's pump pressure meter but using your own meter to do the proper measures!!

As other folks mentioned, HK can never be pump at cold start unless you are parking your car in the gas station to check tire pressure in the morning....or having the pump in your own garage!!

I think it depends on what/where is referring. The highway is quite smooth in HK and most of European countries. I didn't drive much in US but the highway from SFO to San Jose is definitely not smooth......of course, the road is much much better in downtown in US comparing to HK.

The highways here are ususally not too bad, it's the city streets that can cause problems. Particularly those used frequently by heavy trucks, they can wear out the roads pretty fast, causing potholes, cracks and other bumpy hazards.
