Bad Starts (video)

Ive posted this in general forum but i decided to repost to 335i engineRecently my car has been starting up weird, Doing weird rev bouncing. I start it up and it looks like im playing the gas pedal. I had my spark plugs and injectors replaced a couple months ago. Anyone know the reason for this?

Mine does the same sometimes and shakes a bit as well. It looks like the HPFP.
In my case the revs go up to almost 2k then down to 400-500 and I can feel the car shaking and then again up to 1,5k and then slowly down to 600.
But it's not a daily routine, just from time to time, usually in the morning after pushing the car really hard the night before.

I had some HPFP codes a month ago and after updating the software no more codes but it doesn't start as nice as it used to do when I bought it.

Yea man, my car acts just like yours. Was so smooth when i bought it. Except, i dont have push my car to start up bad. It just does it in the mornings, not always though.

Yep, HPFP, do doubt. Just wait, it will get worse from there and then maybe will throw enough codes for a replacement, but in the meantime you're gonna have to live with it. I just had my 3rd pump replaced yesterday and all last week my Rpm's got more and more erratic at idle to the point where 2 days ago when i started the car in the morning, RPM's jumped to 3,500 and back down to 300! on it's own then back up to 2,000 then down to 200! which then the car spuddered, engine bounced around under the hood violently and the car stalled. NO CEL don't ask me HOW but had it brought to BMW and they instantly faulted the HPFP and replaced it in a day service. Cars good as new, For now...sigh. Good Luck!

It's the HPFP not providing enough fuel pressure and forcing the ECU to rev the engine a bit more to compensate. At least I think so.

My car did the same and showed a lack of power without codes, until finally I got a CEL while driving hard and could replace the pump

My dealer replaced my HPFP without the car throwing any codes. You should not have to wait for the pump to fail before getting it replaced....this is a safety issue and the dealers are WELL aware of this problem. Your really do not want if to finally fail at 80mph on the motorway.

Take it to your dealer and demand a new HPFP.

Very curious to know what happened, Mike. I'm in the same boat here. My misfires ARE related to the pump failing. When i start my car, sometimes, it sutters on and sometimes, it's just fine. I get misfires on the high rpm's 5-7 times out of 10. At idle, the car will buck BUT no codes...... (except misfires) Pain in the ass...

yup thats me... i have the same issue and i just brought the car in today.. im sure we have the same problem.. sometimes theres a long crank (over 3-4seconds) and the rev spikes are rather annoying and scary... anyway i took a video and showed it to my SA and he said its most likely the fuel pump however they have to be able to mimic the issue we are having... then take some measurements and calculations of the fuel pump and send them to bmw for approval blahblahblah... he assured me as long as they can reproduce the problem infront of there eyes they will take care of it..

p.s iv had this problem since i got the juicebox put in my car (how long ago was that mike hahah i cant remember) id save over 15k kms

Similar thing on my car, it actually threw a code one time. Cyl 1+3 misfire. HPFP was replaced 10k ago.. dont think thats it. Does it happen on warm starts too? I find it calms down after the car gets going.. doesnt always throw codes or CEL either. Got a dealer visit soon for this and other things .

yes it does happen when its hot.. it was 42degress Celsius today in toronto and my car cranked on start up (after not starting it for a few hours) for 5seconds... and after that or any time if i were to start the car and turn it off around 3 times consecutively the problem disappears ...

reading my post #12, i scanned my car and i got 29F2, i assume that is hpfp code.... this morning, i started it up again, it bogged, idle jumped like roller coaster... once the car get going, it was fine... but since i'm 24 miles away from dealership, i had bmw assist and tow my car in this afternoon... hopefully i will hear from the SA tomorrow evening.
and a side note, that is a 881 pump with only 8 months, 7000 miles only

Just got a call from my sa...he said the problem with the high revs at start up is because of the air conditioning.. I think this is total bullshit I'm going tonight afterwork to talk to them.. I showed him a video before he took the car in and he said it was probly the hfpf and today its the air conditioning.. He also said he started 3 other cars and they sound the same.. Ugh so frustrating.. There's no way the ac is causing this lol
