Wrapping Carbon Fiber Trim but can't take ashtray apart
I have practically finished wrapping my E92 335d walnut interior with 3M Di-Noc carbon fiber but am stuck on the large centre console area's ashtray. I have been looking at other threads including the ashtray wrap thread which is excellent and helped me do the rear ashtray but the way the front ashtray is assembled including the lighter etc, I can't get it apart to remove the ashtray lid so I can wrap it. Here are a couple of picture of what I am trying to remove. Its the bit in Walnut that I need to get off and I can see the 5 clips but can't get at them. I assume I need to dismantle the whole thing.....

Thanks but thats the post I have followed. It doesn't show you how to get it out of the surrounding unit so you can pry them apart using the five clips. Ive spent the last hour trying it with the lid still in the unit and have finally done it so I suppose it wasn't supposed to come out but what a sod
thanks man |

Yeah, I did take it out of the housing in the end but it still left no access for the clips. I didn't want to then remove the spring system as I was worried I would never get it back

I have taken about 100 of these apart. First you will need to remove both the springs. Make sure to label them. One is silver and one is black, put them in a baggie and label the side.
Once the springs are removed you will need to squeeze the plastic side studs. Work the side that has all the retractable parts first. You will need to jump it off the track, and I will tell you it will require some force. Be PATIENT!!!!! It may take a couple of trys. Once you get that side off, you do the same to the other. The door will look all jacked up and offset. Compress the center stud and you will be able to remove the door. Once the door is off, you will have like 6 clips to push forward. This will release the finished part from the plastic housing. At that point you can decide if you want to remove the "galvano colored" decorative strip. Then cover!!! Hope this helps, here is a front and rear I just finished on my wifes hotrod. |
