Need Winter Tires?

Strange topic in this sweltering heat. But I'm thinking about moving to the Nanaimo BC area. Should I bother taking my winter tires with me or leave them behind? My other tires are summer performance tires, not all seasons. Thanks.

I would but it depends

Just check the weather trends throughout the year and if it dips close or below 0 at that time of the year when you are going to be there, then by all means take them with you, better safe than sorry!

winter tires are not just for snow, they're for cold weather traction (summer tires get very hard in cold weather and you lose much of their traction). since you already have winters, just keep them.

Winters should be used when the temp drops below 7 degrees celsius

Good points about the temperature guys. I think that it would be just a bit above 0 at various times during the winter. Sounds like it would be a good idea to switch over the tires. Thanks.

I strongly believe in this..."It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it"

...if shipping doesn't cost you more than buying a new pair. If they're due for replacement in the next few years, it's better to sell them and then buy new ones there than to try to ship them over. Shipping those things can be expensive. (just work out the differences)

Other than yourself where do you get the tires changed. Is Canadian tire or costco ok for Vancouver or do you go back to the dealership ?

Definately bring them. ICBC will enjoy denying any claim you make if you get into a fender bender. Better safe than sorry!

If your car has RFT's and the rims are larger than 17", I wouldn't suggest going to Canadian Tire or Costco due to the fact they don't have the best tire machine for the job (especially since RTF's are extremely rigid).

Find a shop with a corghi tire machine (like us). This machine is used in most BMW dealerships and tire shops that does alot of performance tires. We also have a road force balancer.

It's always better to have an extra set of tires. Best to bring them over, and you can always sell it over there if you ever decide to get new ones.

If I lived in a place where I knew I would never have to drive the car in wet or snow, or below 0 degrees I would leave summers on year round. I see people in NYC do it all the time.

Under 7 degrees celsius you absolutley need winters. Tires become blocks of rubber

Although I live in Toronto I used to travel to Nanaimo for business....everyone here would blast me for this, but I would not bother with winter tires in Nanaimo...but that's just me....but if you decide to go for it, if you go to the dealer to swap the dealer will charge you double of what costco or any other reliable mechanic would charge...also, I do not believe BMW is in Nanaimo but there is a dealership in Victoria, so you can save your self the drive by getting it done locally....

I woud stick with stock size tires, the 245/45R17 tires actually have a larger diameter than the stock 255/40R17 (about 0.7' difference).
Your speedo will read 2.6% too low (if speedo is 60mph, you'll actually be going 61.6mph). The size difference will also affect your ABS and traction control.

also keep in mind that if it gets hot, you can make your winter tires to hard to be usefull in snow

Nanaimo is coastal with little snow, but it does get cold, with plenty on black ice as the temp warms up during the day, then dips down below freezing at night.

DEFINITELY bring the snow tires with you. There should be a Kal Tire in Nanaimo that can mount/dismount tires without damage to the tires or rims.

17" definitely, and the wheel design needs to be compatible to clear the disc brakes. I'm running 225-45s on 8" wide rims. Some members are running 205 widths on 7.5" rims.
