2A87 /3100 cause under boost?
2A87 VANOS exhaust – stiff; jammed mechanically
3100 Boost-pressure control, deactivation – boost-pressure buildup prohibited (N54 only) will these codes cause boost loss? my buddy's car is having this problem, everytime he go WOT to redline on autotune(6/16) map1, limp mode shows up. but even if the codes not showing up, seems like his car is under-boosted, we have same mode(yes, everything is same). my car will pull him easy. i know the problem is the vanos solenoid, hes getting the car fixed next week, but i just want to know will the solenoid cause the car under boost?

Yes, a VANOS solenoid issue will also cause the underboost issue. They almost always go together like peanut butter and jelly. I had a sticky VANOS solenoid at ~40k miles. Fixed under warranty. Still rockin' at 70k miles.

bumping this.
i just got a limp mode with codes 2A87 and 3100. Now that i know what they are...will this cause serious damage if the solenoid is not replaced? dealership is blaming my mods and will not do anything about it even though there is a bulletin out on it here : http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B110208g.htm

Definitely a do-able DIY. And no harm comes of driving around with a bad solenoid. But definitely replace it sooner than later so you can start enjoying your car again.

i guess you can try a different dealer. and build friendship with ur SA. really helps for this VERY unreliable/mod friendly car.

But if you see 30FF codes by itself, it's likely an underboost condition caused by a tune mapping or an actual boost leak. Shiv |

Good info - If you have a Bentley Manual it looks like an easy DIY for the solenoids. Might be worth trying to clean with compressed air before buying a new one.

2a87 and JB4
Hi,
I have this issue a couple of times, using my JB4 both on Map 1 and Map 5. However I have been unable to replicate the issue using Map 4 (stock). Going to do more testing, as if I can replicate the problem I might take it back under warranty. Or may even try and clean them first, however one garage has quoted me £200 and to do an oil change? They're right on the front of the engine and a VERY easy DIY if you have a 5mm allen-wrench. Clean out with carb and choke cleaner (removes oil and gunk better than brake clean) then brake clean (removes residues). Reinstall with a light coat of oil on the o-ring. Not worth your time to drive to a shop when it's that easy. Best to do with a cold engine so the parts aren't so hot.

3100 is code for limp mode. No need to worry that code
