Thumbs up Another Trip to Laguna Seca!

Thought I would share my latest video with my latest toy.
This was shot with the HD Hero and was held by a suction cup. (Crazy huh?)
I still need a lot of work with my driving. There was a guy at the track that has been racing for 20 years and he said that he was able to run a 1'46" with his 328i!
I listened to every single word he said and I learned a lot from him.

This event was the very first time I ran with a Recaro Pole Position seat. I never thought a seat would make such a huge difference. I always thought about how it's a good weight savings but I felt so much more in control.
I have to thank all of the guys at EAS for setting me up with the hardware needed for the seat install.

I have a lot of footage with various angles to edit. This is just a taste.
You can also check the vid here:

Here's another one with different camera angles:

Man that looks like alot of fun. Great video as well. I've noticed that you are heavy on the brakes judging by the frequent abs noises. What kind of brake set up are you running and fluid? If stock, any boiling/fading issues?

Yah, it was a bad day for the brakes.
I was testing out another RT pad from Cool Carbon and it wasn't good.
I had to brake early at every corner and the pads would fade easily.
I'm sure my times would have improved if I didn't have the issues with the brakes.

Remember though (to everyone), I was testing out these pads. They are not on the market and I doubt that they will be after what I experienced so don't start hating Cool Carbon for something that they are researching.

What does it cost to drive at Laguna Seca? I'm 6 hours away, but I've always wanted to drive it.

Nice. LS is a great track for a powerful car. Back in the 90s, I used to run my Miata there and I wondered what the fuss was about. It was only until i started racing more powerful cars there did I appreciate how nicely the track flows from turn to turn. And it's a lot more forgiving now (more gravel traps) than it used to be thankfully.

Mr.5, you remove all your passenger seats for track days?

Shiv

ps. I think your friend was pulling your leg with his 328 that ran 1'46"s. Unless it was a full blown race car with slicks, that's pretty fast for a moderately powered sedan. Stock e90 m3s run right around there.

I did it this time just for kicks.
I think that next time I'll just change out the driver's seat.

He is extremely talented. He had R comps on the 328 but that's it. He was running an e46 M3 that day but I don't know what his lap times were that day. All I know is that he came pretty close to lapping me in our session. Also, I don't know if it was the sedan or coupe.

Mr.5: Had fun yesterday. Nice relaxing day. :-)

@Shiv: I think I wasn't clear on the 1.46. That was in an E36 M3. R-comps, suspension and springs, fuel map and a couple of other things - can't remember exactly what else my student did to his car. (I was instructing - so the objective wasn't to thrash my students car.) Wasn't a full on racecar, but definitely way better than stock.) Best I have done with my 328is (R-comps, Turner software and cold air intake - which I find annoying btw) was 1.49.9- and that was on a fairly good track day. To put it in perspective, an E46 M3 with springs, shocks, R-comps (but no engine/software/intake mods) is capable of 1.45's. My times for yesterday with a stock E46 M3 with R-comps were mostly in the low 1.48's. (Thoretical - according to the data logger, was 1.47.6.)

Thanks for clearing that up. All I know is that your driving is sick and I could only imagine what you could do with my car.
Great meeting you!

Here's something you can compare to:

This data was taken on 5/31/2010 @ Laguna.

E46 M3 (yes, I know this is not an E46 forum.) :-)
Stock except for:

R-comps, 18"
Aftermarket shocks, springs and sway bars
Big brake kit - Stoptech - all four wheels (not legal for Koni Challenge, may be legal in another series)

The driver is fairly decent, but not a racer. (He has around 5 years of karting and track experience.) Based on watching him, I believe the car is capable of better times (perhaps around 0.5 seconds or more.)

Data was taken using a Race Technologies, DL1 datalogger.

It might be interesting to compare data to a stock E90+ generation. Now I'm kind of curious. :-)

Great video Mr.5, loved it. Could you snap a picture of your camera setup. I am dying to run a similar setup on my car at the track. Thanks as always.

I don't have that since it's the e90.

Ahh.. that makes more sense. And yep, those e90 m3s are really amazing on the roadcourse. I drove one at WAJ (western automotive journalist) event last year. With two journalists in the car, I was running in the 44-45sec range, lap after lap, with traffic. Such a fun and easy car to drive right out of the box. It was unreal driving a mid-sized sedan that has the body control, brakes and balance of a tiny sports car. It was especially fun for me because that is the only fast car I've ever run at LS that didn't go over the sound limit. Usually i'm putting past the sound meter which is no fun
