Oil Catch Can - Necessary?

I've been reading up on OCC's lately, however I'm not sure if I should purchase one. I've heard people say both good & bad things about them. For some, the OCC works as designed and catches the extreme blowby that our N54's create. However, for others, the OCC does not catch blowby, and if it does, it's very little. I simply wanted to make this thread to see whose OCC is working, and whose isn't. Please list the type you have as well

I think a catch can is a good idea when upgrading the FMIC so you don't soil it with oil.

Yes but it's already covered in oil unless you remove, drain and de-oil the stocker then not much point.

The purpose of a catch can system is to collect/vent the blowby vapors inherent as part of the combustion process. The factory setup sucks these oily vapors directly back into the engine exposing them to everything in their path.

In the short term getting these vapors out of the combustion path reduces knock retard by not allowing oil vapor to mix with the air fuel mixture. In addition the more free flowing lines allow the engine to rev easily giving a more responsive feel to the engine as a whole.

Over the long haul these untended to vapors will build up over the intake valves leading to a host of running issues and an expensive repair bill to fix. With a catch can installed you will save yourself from dealing with this hassle.

I've personally had experience with both a collection of oil in my charge pipe and intercooler piping and have since installed one. I would recommend for you to check out the BSH Competition OCC as it's one of the best cans out there in the market today! I'll shoot you over a PM with the details

That is a very wise statement. This is insurance for cheap. We have lots of money in things like our intercooler, intake, charge pipe, etc. It is nice to protect them from coats of oil.

The guys that say an oil catch can does nothing have not taken off their intercooler / charge pipes. I've seen oil coat the piping before and a lot of our customers have also reported the same. Without an oil catch can to catch the blow by, you're eventually going to get that oil down your intake valves which will later lead to loss of power and possible pinging issues. In my opinion, an oil catch can is necessary on ALL TURBOCHARGED applications.

We've sold a ton of the BSH catch cans and our customers have been happy with them! They look great in the engine bay and the quality fittings and welds ensure no leaks.

I have the McKinney CC and I must say I am very impressed. After 2 track days and 4,000 kms, quite a bit of oil. Here are the pics.

There are plenty, just go online and look up OCCs for other platforms. High quality as well, the only problem is piecing together a standard kit for the N54. Piecing together the hoses/fittings to use a nice shiny "non-BMW taxed" OCC is all we need.

technically they could void your warranty for anything you put on the car thats not OEM if they can remotely link it to the problem...
Is it likely... that all depends a few variables which will differ from person to person (ie. who your SA is, how strick the dealership is, what the non-oem mod is, etc...)
For an OCC IMO its highly unlikely they would try to link that to any warranty issues unless it was blatant that the OCC caused a problem...

A dealer can not void your warranty unless the part is proven to have caused the malfunction in question.

We've had several customers go to the dealership with these catch cans installed without any issues.

This is definitely a reliability mod and EVERYONE who has a turbocharged BMW should have it - regardless if you're stock or tuned.

doesn't the n54 already have a oil separator form factory. According to this on page 11. I'm a big on the OCC, had on my previous car and it did very well. But once I found out that the n54 already had one I didn't worry.

If you've ever taken off the charge pipe from your BMW, you'd understand that the factory PCV system does not really do a good job of separating the oil since the oil ends up coating the charge pipes.

I had my turbos replaced, and didn't even pull the occ before I took it in. The sa an tech both remarked on it - they were wondering why it wasn't standard from BMW!
